I have some vhs tapes that I would really like to backup onto my computer. The question is whether I would be able to do this with my 1ghz tibook and how?

Of course this is possible! Do you have a DV cam with video in? If you do, you can record your VHS tapes onto the DV cam and import using iMovie.

If you dont have a DV cam, the cheapest and easiest way to capture a few VHS tapes is to rent a DV cam. Or better yet, borrow one from a friend for a few days.

I think a Formac 'Studio' box may do it, although I have no real in depth experience of using one...

Do a search on this forum. Your question was discussed very recently, you should find your solution in that thread. I'd do it for you but I've just got up and am too lazy

remember that most video cameras and analog-to-dv converter boxes will refuse to import macrovision protected VHS tapes!

There are numerous firewire video capture devices you could use as well. Using a firewire camera is the easiest/cheapest way if you already have one... if you don't however look into some of these devices.

As others have said, there's been a thread very recently about this very thing... I recall there were several specific products mentioned to try.
