Once again I head off to school this September. I won't have enough money to have a G5 AND eat (damn you, ingrained need for hamburgers!) so I'm stuck thus: I have a prefectly fine Pismo 400 which, although a little slow, has handled my abuse for four years so far and hasn't broken. I've used newer Powerbooks and iBooks recently and they don't seem nearly as durable.
If I take my Pismo, I'll need one of those 900 MHz G3 upgrades and a bigger hard drive. I've got half a gig of RAM already; don't need more. So that's perhaps $500 for a machine that will fill my needs and definitely not mind abuse.
If a new Apple portable comes out that isn't easily broken, I can spend $1500 and get a faster computer. There are several threads on these fora talking of IBM's revisions to the G3; it would seem silly for Apple not to take advantage (it's been almost a year since the last revision, yes?).
I guess the long and the short of it is, is it likely that a new iBook will appear before September?

Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

The iBook was updated in April 2003, this means we can bet the next update will happen before the end of the year (Sept-Oct). The iBook will probably get the new 1ghz IBM G3 chip with 1mb of L2 cache and maybe Airport Extreme...

Upgrade the Pismo every time. They are awesome machines...
The new *books are no way near as durable, the Pismo to me, was almost indestructible... If I we you, I would not part with it for the near future if you can get the upgrades sorted relatively cheaply!
I had a 'Wallstreet' for years, and still wish I had never sold it. I instead got an iBook 500... which broke 3 weeks later!

Wow, $350 for a 900Mhz upgrade. Yeah, I would definately upgrade, with more ram and a faster hard drive the thing will smoke. Save what is left over.

Pismo rocks, for sure.
But... not as tough as the icebooks? Are you all smokin' crack or something?
Those things are as tough as they come...

Upgrade the Pismo, absolutely. $350 for that 900MHz upgrade and you will have a new machine again.
And I have had two iBooks and this Pismo, the Pismo is definately more durable.

Yeah I'm for the CPU too.. unless you want to play games... in that case the GPU on the ibook would be much nicer.
