I want to get a smartmedia adapter PC card for my 17" PB and was wondering if it sticks out a few millimeters or whether it inserts flush into the slot.

Thanks.

Flush, although there is an issue with Compact Flash cards that's been discussed but not resolved by Apple yet: at times it can take the PowerBook over 5 minutes to recognize the card properly, during which time it's completely non-responsive other than being able to move the cursor. Even the clock stops in the menu bar.

Trying to remove the card early causes a kernel panic. Using an external Firewire or USB card reader doesn't cause problems.

In my case, if the PowerBook is fresh from a restart, there's no problem. But if I try to insert the card after the PowerBook's been in sleep mode, I invariably get that delay. I use a SanDisk Firewire card reader now instead.

Maybe it doesn't occur with Smartmedia.

Wow, thanks for the info. I was just about to buy a card reader for my CF card.

Has anybody tried the Smartmedia CF reader?

Yes, I have a SanDisk 4 in 1 PC card adapter. Similar behaviour with Smartmedia except no kernel panic. I waited forever at first but then learned to restart the computer with the adapter and card in place. Glad to hear Apple is working on it.
