About 7 months ago I was the proud owner of a G3 12" 700 iBook, which quite nastilly ended up bouncing out of a bag and smashing on the ground. Everything worked but the screen, which for some reason, wasn't replaceable so I've vouchers to go get a new laptop at the nearest store.

Now, the voucher value is the original RRP of the machine so if I was to do a direct swap, I could get a 14" Combo unit G3 900, or for a wee bit extra, could go up to a 12" PB yet the problem is the screen is a wee bit on the small side but I could live with it.

But I've already got memory and an old airport card, which presumably, won't be able to be used in the PB. Well, the memory might, but can anyone definately confirm that the old Airport card won't?

I use it mainly for office work on the road, and maybe some design work showing projects to clients in Keynote and dabble in the odd bit of video editing.

Any help greatfully received...

Neither the memory or the airport card will work in the new powerbook, but I would agree that if posisble you should just sell them and get the 12" powerbook. It's very nice.

Oh yes it is. I own both machines and the PB beats the iBook hands down.

Better design, scratch resistant, G4 is optimised for OSX. The iBook is a fine computer but the PB is the best Mac I've ever owned. The keyboard alone is worth getting it.

Seconded!

It is a great machine, and well worth the money...

Wait, did we do this once before?>? I have owned the PB 12" and I currently own the ibook 900. I preferred the ibook mainly because I couldn't see obvious advantages of the Powerbook. Except for the keyboard. But that's not a deal-breaker for me.

Seriously, outside of business networking.. who the hell needs AP Extreme? And Bluetooth? There are only a handful of cell phones that take advantage of that nugget and Sony-Ericsson sucks (that should piss somebody off ).
How could you NOT choose the ibook. It's so cute!!

I will close by saying: Different strokes for different folks.
Even though I hate that phrase.

Oy.

Seriously though, BT rocks IMO. I've got the Ericsson T68 and the Sony Ericsson T610, both excellent phones btw and hey, it was a free upgrade my provider offered and I like the camera...
I use them both, one for business, one for my private line. Being able to synch the PB to both phones is fantastic. They both contain a decent calendar so I was able to get rid of my Palm Pilot and still carry all my appointments with me.

On the iBook using the keyboard for long periods of time is a pain, literally. Monitor spanning isn't officially supported. I love my iBook for use at home but it just isn't equipped to be a business tool. IMO

Lol, there does seem to be a bit of Deja Vu going on!!

I think we had it sorted in the last thread when we mentioned, that it all depends on what Apps you use and what features you actually need... as you say, 'each to their own'!

It is interesting though that the issue should keep cropping up... I think Apple needs to address the product Matrix, and make things a lot clearer... it is OK for us experienced Mac 'geek's, but for 'new' users and switchers, it must be a nightmare deciding between G3s, and G4s, Altivec, Velocity Engine, DDR, SDRAM, Bus speeds etc, when the form factors and prices of the machines are so close! Do we really want to be confusing new and existing customers?

One thing is for sure though, each machine is cool, and will do a great job.

peter.sugarcube, our previous discussion on this is here:

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=168138

There was a split decision, with some going for the iBook, some the G4 Powerbook, but interesting points are made nonetheless!

However, I still find it hard to past a G4...
