Just got offered to buy a new, unopened tibook 1 ghz superdrive for $2200. Sold my old powerbook g4 800 yesterday and need another computer (I prefer to upgrade every year instead of buying applecare - works out about the same if done right). Anyway, I can't really afford any more than $2200 right now. Is $2200 a good deal for the superdrive powerbook or will the price drop to under $2000 if a new powerbook is announced today?
Thanks

Well so far the only new addition to the store was Soundtrack, so unless Joz announces something I think its a fair deal. Your basically getting a new laptop for less than what it goes for and new. The 15" PB's are still great machines, even though they may not have some of the newer bells and whistles.

I'm trying to figure out the math and logic on that statement.
If a computer is working great for you and things are for the most part still peppy why buy a new every year. Applecare is what $350 for a laptop, wouldn't a year old laptop sold on ebay (or where ever) depreciate more then 350?
Then of course you have a chance of giving up a good computer that fits your needs to one that could be defective and after 90 days you have to pay $45 for tech calls. It doesn't add up to me, I'm not trying to flame you, just get my brain wrapped around spending 2,000+ every year.
Mike

That's a great deal.
(Not as great as the deal I'm offering for a 1Ghz over in the MacNN Marketplace -- yes, a shameless plug -- but a great deal nevertheless!)
Buy it!

My rationale:
I bought a new powerbook G4 800 for $ 2000 when the 867mhz/1ghz were announced. I got it from a local guy new and sealed with receipt. I sold it yesterday for 1700. The warranty expires in the fall and if I keep it a) I would buy applecare and spend $350 or b) if I wanted to sell it then it would have depreciated even more than now once new powerbooks are announced. I hate realizing that my expensive, great powerbook is worth nothing so quickly!
So I'm going to put 500 toward a new one with another year of warranty. That's $150 more than if I were to keep it and just buy applecare.
I have rental attitude toward my computers. I bought one a long time ago (like an initation or membership fee) and since then I add a few hundred dollars per year in rent for having the pleasure of using it. I'd prefer to spend 500 a year for a new computer than to give the money away to applecare.
You're right though, I do run the risk of getting a bad computer. And you're right that maybe it's crazy to do it this way. It's funny because each computer has flaws that make me want to upgrade to the next. It's no longer about speed which I think there's plenty of, but rather about ergonomics, heat, LCD brightness/viewing angle, keyboard comfort etc etc. I'd like to get a 15 inch alumnium powerbook, but there isn't one available. Or a powerbook 12" with dvi so I could connect a monitor, but there isn't one available. So another tibook it is - until next year!

Hey, Flash, you're right!
Here it is!
Seriously, it's an awesome deal for someone. I would hope that a fellow MacNN member would get it.
