Here's some surprising info from the service archives where I work, this information only relates to Powerbooks serviced under original warranty within the last 6 months. It doesn't take into account older Powerbooks serviced under Applecare, nor does it factor in repairs envolving abuse or accidental damage (negligence).

Here goes...

1GHz TiBooks: 36 warranty claims

17" BigAl: 5 claims

12" LittleAl: 3 claims

What makes this especiallly interesting is that at this location the 12" Powerbook outsold the TiBook 2 to 1 in the last 6 months, and BigAl selling almost the same number of units as the Ti (77 to 79).

Note: we not only service the systems we sell, we handle most Apple Warranty claims in this immediate geographic area. So that does muddle things a bit, but I think it's still fascinating none-the-less.

If anyone wants more specifics regarding which issues are the most prevalent with each model, have no fear, I'm compiling that info and will have it available early next week.

This is interesting.

Expect it to be seized upon by certain folks of evidence of one kind or another in 3..2..1..

Looks like the 12" pb's are built better that I thought. Guess one should take complaints on this forum with a grain of salt, realizing this IS a place for people to post problems....

But I really appreciate this info, and look forward to next week!

My 17" went in because of a defective modem (that initially worked fine), which seems like a standard small percentage hardware failure of a commodity component. What is more important is how well Apple took care of these repairs when they were required, my experience was very good.

So what were the problems with the 15? My guess is that some of them were:

1) Faulty SuperDrives
2) Loud fan (not a real defect)

My guess would be exactly the same - this was what mine went in for.

Why doesnt apple get a clue then. Think about how many 15 inch al books they could be selling on top of the 12 inch pbs. Its the fact taht the 17 is just to big for most ppl.

Please, let me know when you're done with compiling. I'm having difficulty choosing between the current Powerbooks and new models may be around the corner too.
What about heat related problems in 12” PB ?
And are you implying new memory modules are on the way to boost RAM passed 1GB on the 12”?

Actually, the 1GB DDR SODIMMs are available now, they're just god-awful expensive (>$800 each).

BTW, I'll have the info posted this evening, I've just been really damned busy lately.

Well that was scientific (NOT). Without any other data or proper controls your results can only be purely anecdotal, however compelling they may seem.
