after replacing one of the 64MB chips in a
bronze powerbook with a 256MB chip it
now only shows 192 megs installed. can
the bronze g3 use a 256MB chip? is there
a firmware upgrade?

thanks

you aren't using correct ram modules for it.

the bronze pbg3 can take 512mb ram.

the 256mb module is a 32Mx64 module.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Why would one 256MB module work and another wouldn't? What do I need to look for in the 256MB module to ensure that it will work?

I have a Lombard and it is VERY finicky about Ram. It takes the older PC66. A lot(most) of the newer and faster PC100 or PC133 is not backward compatible to PC66 and only half the Ram will show up. You really have to buy from a reliable source selling specific memory for the Lombard to be safe and not deal with the hassles of incompatible Ram, ie, ramjet, transintl.

half the ram showing up means it's a density problem.. older computers in general don't support "high density" RAM which squeezes a lot of memory into a few chips on the stick of RAM, but only support "low density." i'm not sure if there's a centralized database of which computers need low density RAM.. so lots of people find out the way you did.
