The iBook is a really nice machine. But it is not more solid than the Al Powerbooks or the older G3 (Wall St, Lombard, Pismo) PB. It is, however, cheaper. it's big weakness is the screen. And with no fan, it has been known to cook its own hard drive.

The iBook has a fan, and mine is annoying the heck out of me.

I also thought the iBooks had no fan, but my 900 MHz one definitely has one. Mine turned on yesterday, after about 2 hours of it sitting on my bed. It shouldn't get as hot when sitting on a table, right? That would be a real bummer...

Don't do that. Not sure what's in the iBook manual, but that's a definite no-no according to the PowerBook manual. Probably a good general rule in any case. A soft bed would block airflow around the machine and cause it to heat up.

My 600Mhz iBook has a fan (all of them do), but I've never heard it. When I'm in a silent room, I can hear a faint whisper if I put my ear up to it, but that could be the hard drive as easily as the fan.

you could always put a tray between the iBook and the bed. i had more use of an airbake cookie sheet this way than baking cookies .

How come? The only thing I can think of is the iBook heating up and catching it on fire, lol. I just put it on my lap when i'm on the bed.

I used my 366, 500 and 800mhz models on the bed all the time. NO problems. (Also Dad's Ti 400 and 667.)
DVD's no less.

Actually, it will surpass the G4 quite soon. The G3 already has in quite a few people's eyes.
I am sure most of you have heard about the 1.1GHz G3 that IBM just realeased and it is pretty fast.
In fact, many want it over the G4 on a portable.
This speaks quite well upon it: http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...63#post1516663
More articles exist.
I doubt the G3 is old news since it belongs to IBM, and research will continue.
I can't say the same for Motorola or the G4 though.
My next computer will almost definietly be another iBook as I think that is Apple's best rounded notebook. If not, then the 15" Powerbook or IBM Thinkpad.

Took me perhaps close to a year before the fan turned itself on the first time for me. All I hear daily is the hard drive which I am considering switching down the road. It was much more silent when I first got my iBook, but it's still bearable thought.
Yes, the iBooks gets considerable more hotter if used on bed. But you might notice it better if you have the power cord plugged in as it tend to get hotter then.
