Can the video mirroring be altered to Dual displays on the iBook 900?

If it can, when it's in Dual display mode will it allocate 16mb per screen thus disabling Quartz Extreme?

If so, is there a way to make it just drive my external TFT (1280 x 1024 Samsung 181T)?

Thanks

Yes, you can alter video mirroring to enable dual display on the iBook/900, instructions are at http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html.

It will allocate 16mb per screen, but that is the minimum for Quartz Extreme to run, so it's not a problem.

I'm not sure if thre's a way to have it just drive the external display, but you can always set the external display to the main monitor, turn the LCD of the iBook display to 0% brightness, and close the lid most of the way.

I thought Quartz extreme was 32mb, you've made me a happy guy

I was reading about the hack and it says (after you've done the hack)

After this patch Quartz Extreme will not be active while using two screens. This is the same problem as with the Powerbook G4 with 16 MB VRAM. You can fix this issue by changing the value of

GLCompositorMinimumVRAM

in the file

System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework /Versions/A/Frameworks /CoreGraphics.framework /Versions /A/Resources /Configuration.plist
from 16 to 8.
So maybe it takes a little tweaking but from reading this I assume I can run dual monitors with QE on the 900 iBook?

I was just concerned about there being no QE when running dual monitors. I'll be running my PC headless and keeping my Samsung 18.1" 181T TFT, MS Wireless deskotp and MX700. It would have seemed a shame to not have been able to use it.

Yeah, that hack is for cards that have 16mb. I use it because I span with my April '02 iBook/700 which has a 16mb card. You won't need it.

You should be fine, I am using my iBook 800 with an external keyboard and mouse on a 17" TFT too.

Stink different.

Followup question:

With the spanning hack, can a modern iBook drive a 1600x1200 external display?

I'm going to buy a 20" LCD; I'd like to buy a Powerbook to drive it, but I wouldn't mind buying a cheaper iBook instead -- if i know it can drive the display.

Has anyone done this?

There's a forum where you will probably get an answer, since the developer of the patch seems to be reading (and answering) it:
