Back. Up. Now.

Clicking drive noises generally tend to mean that the drive is on its way out I am very sorry to say. Run a search in this forum on 'clicking noise' and you'll see what I mean.

Get your stuff off as soon as you can. You then might want to try a clean install. Best of luck.

Yep, like Mastrap said, back up your data NOW. Your HD is...

trying to find data on a sector that is bad,

you have a failing servo,

or you have some seriously cross-linked files.

If it's either of the first two reasons, then you'll need to get a new HD. Sorry.

If it's the third reason, you'll have to reinitialize the HD and install your OS from scratch. This is a slim possibility, but obviously it's worth investigating. Irregardless, BACK UP YOUR DATA NOW! You have a very limited amount of time left.

Hope you have Applecare if something is seriously wrong...

if not, then that's not the end of the world either. Head over to pricewatch.com and scope for new hard drives. some of them are really high performance now...

yep, i'm being a little premature... you go backup now!

Buy an external firewire drive and do a Carbon Copy Clone to it within a few days. In my case I had about 1 week from first onset of the clicks to complete hard drive failure. It will fail and you will lose data. The clicking your hearing is the head assembly re-training on the platter because of damage to the drive platters. As the damage escalates, the debris asks as sand paper on the platters and makes the problem worse and worse over time. Eventually it just "goes"

The most recent occurence of this I had to deal with is my 17" Powerbook and its 60GB internal drive. I bought an 80 and CCC'd the sick one to it and swapped the drives. After doing that I tried to reformat the 60GB and it failed right then, now it doesn't format at all or read/write.

What kind of clicking? Does it come up periodically? How much time between the clicks? Because clicking every few minutes seems quite normal to me. Of course, if it clicks every few seconds and starts to make other nonusual noises itīs high time for a backup!

I had this happen to my PBG4 - 500. Ironically, it started during the keynote of MWNY 2001! I had 2 IE windows opened and refreshed both of them. That's when the clicking started. 20 minutes later, Apple had me set up to send it back to the mothership for repairs. I had it back in less than a week.

Give Apple a call. They'll hook you up.

I got the 80GB Hitachi which is the largest to date. Checkout www.googlegear.com for pretty good prices, perhaps the best...
