I am not sure if this has been covered here before, but I think this might be a great news to some of the high end users.
Transintl has announced the availability of its 1GB modules for the 17" powerbook. This raises the max RAM limit of that PowerBook to 2GB!!!
This is awsome.

Nice. But will the system recognize the additional RAM or not? Is the extra RAM actually used by the system, or is this just marketing fluff? Apple quotes the maximum capacity at 1GB right?

Interesting that they only sell modules for the 17" and not the 12". While the one you'd get for the 17" would work in the 12" PowerBook, it's undoubtedly more expensive than a PC2100 module. I'd also expect that the demand for a 12"-specific module would be much higher than this one, due to the low RAM limit on the 12". A german site has had a 1GB module for the 12" PowerBooks listed for several months now, but with no indication of shipping time.

"But will the system recognize the additional RAM or not?"

yes, it will.

"Is the extra RAM actually used by the system, or is this just marketing fluff?"

OSX can address up to 2GB of RAM, so yes, it will be used.

"Apple quotes the maximum capacity at 1GB right?"

That was when the highest density SODIMM was 512 megs.
