here is the sitrep:

Powerbook DVI 667
40gb 40gnx travelstar internal
30gb Toshiba original drive external case

The machine installs and runs OSX like a champ. The problem is I cannot get OS9 installed no matter what I try.

Using a retail OS9 cd, I receive a "Code 11" error each time I try and run the install. I have tried restarting and booting off of the CD, running OS9 install from OSX, and no joy. I went so far as to wipe the drive and reinstall X to ensure I had loaded the OS9 drivers.

My next through is switching the drives and placing the machine at its original hardware config, although I cannot see what difference that could make.

Anyone have any suggestions? I sold this machine to a local buyer and am trying to help him out a bit.

Thanks, Kevin

do you have the DVD combo drive?

Mine came with a DVD that installs both OS X and then OS 9 from that same DVD in OS X (i have the Ti 1 gig)

I also had some problems wiht my machine recently and none of my generic installers worked... but the system disks that came with it did...

I can't remember for certain, but I believe that you have install your OS 9 installation before OS X, or install it on a separate partition. One thing you can do is install it on your external HD (if it doesn't already have X on it) and then copy it to the drive you want it on, or you can install it onto a blank disk image in X (via Classic), and then copy the contents of that partition where you want it.

I'm having the same problem with my nephew's Ti400. I did a clean install of 10.2 first. Now I want to put 9 on, but the computer won't let me. When I insert the 9 disk and hold down the "C" during startup, it flashes a folder with a question mark and the Mac smiley, then eventually boots into X. I also tried selecting the 9 disk as the startup in X, but the results are the same. I even tried zapping the PRAM.

I've tried a 9.0, 9.1, and 9.2.1 upgrade disk, all with the same results. I'm willing to wipe the whole drive again and put 9 on first, but how do I do that if it won't let me boot into 9 in the first place?

Any suggestions?

You can install OS9 after installing OSX. In fact, I just installed 9.2 on my Ti 400 after I did a clean install of 10.2.6. I also had difficulty installing OS9--it wouldn't let me and some error message that I can't quite remember. I used DiskWarrior and it fixed all the directory errors I had on OSX and I had no problem installing OS9 since.

Are you sure this applies to webb's tiBook model? When did Apple start shipping models that were not able to boot into OS9 anymore?

The only way I could ever install OS 9 on a TiBook 667Mhz was to insert the OS 9 CD, shut down, and boot back up holding down C key, then reformatting the drive under Utilities and Drive Setup. I erase the drive, then go to "Intall Mac OS" (9). After I'm done installing it THEN I would install OS X.

That's the only way I've been able to get OS 9 on a 667Mhz Titanium.

Good luck.

P.S., If you're trying to load OS 9 AFTERWARDS maybe you're not using OS 9.2.2? That's what you need.

I have a 1GHz 17" G4 powerbook. If your system came with a DVD with OSX and you cannot boot off a commercial OS 9 cd, then you are having the same issue I am. If you just need "Classic" to run under OSX, then insert your OSX DVD and run the "Install Applications & Classic Support" package. This will install OS9 that can run in OSX as "Classic", but is still not bootable.

We have installed OS 9 onto a partition using Target Disk mode and have tried "blessing" the OS9 sytem both through the OSX preference pane as well as through a terminal session. The system sees the OS9 system folder and it looks like the "blessing" succeeded, but still no luck. Simply finding a way to get OS 9 on the HD or a partition will not be enough. We have no answer yet, but this behavior is the same with the 12" powerbook.

We suspect a hardware change inthe new powerbooks that prevent booting in OS9. Booting from commercial OSX CDs is also not possible. We have to use the OSX DVD that came with the Mac.

update, I am still stumped by this one. based on the notes above I have:

wiped the drive clean using the OSX disks and attempted to start from scratch using an OS9 CD (9.2.1)

The machine give me a "Type 11 memory error" message each time I try and boot to the CD.

Firmware is up to date, OS9 drivers are installed on the machine and all looks normal. I had previously installed OS9 on this machine and am not sure what could have changed over the previous few months. I am at a loss.

I am going to try to find another version of OS9 and hope that fixes everything.
