Which temperature monitor do you have installed?

I've not been able to find one that works with the G4s that I have.

Could you point me to that temp. controller that you are using? Thanks.

I'm running a Pismo and just upgraded it with more memory, and a hard drive, it's getting pretty warm, and would be interested to see how hot the thing actually is.

12" PB at 112.8F/44.9C with Temperature Monitor, and I'm just idling while my battery's charging. Last night I was rendering while on IRC and watching a DVD and it got to 139F... the fan then kicked on a few minutes later.

Nothin to worry about, it's a notebook, they're designed to get rather warm. Still isn't uncomfortable to the touch though.

Toasty!

here is a list of temperature monitors..

http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new...mp;x=0&y=0

"Temperature Monitor" is the one i am using.. it works with all the latest G4s. Also has a cool graphing feature to chart your cpu temp over a time period - from as little as 250 seconds to as much as 7 days..

while playing Bejeweled it got up to right around 150 Fahrenheit before the fan kicked in, at which point it didn't get any hotter, but also didn't get any cooler until i quit the game (down to 140 already after probably less than a minute from quitting the game)

Thanks for the link Alex.

Ok, my Pismo has a reading of 56C, it's been up for 3 days without going to sleep. The temperature utility said that the reading could be innacurate since my PB doesn't have a sensor.

Interestring thhough.

how does it get a temperature reading if the computer doesn't have a sensor? maybe it estimates temperature based on load and things like that...

Ah, sorry, forgot to mention this.
I got a popup message when I launched it saying that it would take the reading from OS X itself, from the Mach kernel. I didn't pay much attention to it and it doesn't seem to appear anymore, but I'l try and get it up again, and post the whole message here.

ThermoInDock uses the on-chip sensor built in on some G3 processors. Temperature Monitor uses the fan controller sensor for its temp readings. I'm using both and interestingly they always exactly match. Be aware the chip's accuracy tolerances are wide, but consistent.

The CyberCooler is available here:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cybercoo...tcoolpad1.html

Another version:

http://www.macmice.com/ibreeze.html

My CyberCooler works exceptionally well, runs nearly silent, not as pretty as the ibreeze. It's not high-quality construction, but price is right. Its also very thin to pack in laptop's bag.

Thanks for the link, Bmhome. One thing I've heard mentioned over time, is the fan in some Pb's, my Pismo doesn't come with one, but was wondering how loud they were?

For me, it sounds identical to a cd or dvd spinning.. but where the optical disc makes whatever it happens to be sitting on vibrate (makes a easy vibrating bed without the hassel of quaters ), the fan doesn't..

My Pismo's fan has never turned on, even with a second expansion bay drive running and 100% CPU using Photoshop filters for hours at a time.

You can see the little fan through the grille next to the PCMCIA slot.

When I first bought it new I had a Mac certified service shop install the bottom 512MB RAM chip (they said there was no such thing until I handed to them) and I saw the service tech separate the heat pipe from the procesor card and just stuck them back together (bad bad bad). Didn't know the significance of that until later when others reported much cooler running Pismos. Mt Pismo ran hot; so hot OS9's Gauge Pro reported as high as 205 F. Fan still never came on.

Later, when I got smart, I bought a second spare processor card (for G3 900 soon) that had never been pulled apart from it's heat sink and for over a year it never has gone higher than 138 F since. Surfing the web, its usually 95 to 118 F, where it should always have been. I'm going to experiment with my original processor card when AppleCare runs out (the serial number is hard wired in the card).

And some discussion on Pismo temps after processor upgrades:

Mine is running 118 degrees right now, just doing Internet stuff. When I was doing some lengthy iDVD encoding, it climbed as high as 150 degrees.

FYI, it's a 12" PowerBook G4.

Notice the reference to PPC 970 PowerBooks? IIRC, these guys where announcing the stand for new G5 PowerMacs two days before the official release.

t

I never knew that, I've always assumed that my Pismo never had a fan since I've never heard anything resembling a fan sound coming on. I've even pulled out he processor card, and HD to install memory and a new HD, and still didn't see it.

You learn something new every day.
