Hello

I just recently got an old mac powerbook 3400 running Mac OS 7.6

I've been surfing the net trying to find a few decent programs that I can use on it, but i'm barely having any luck. I've managed to find a couple browsers ( wannabe, icab and netscape ) that work on it, and i've found an old icq build that works on it..

i'm curious if anyone out there knows of any other IM clients that will work on this ol' thing? Or browsers for that matter?

Also, my main reason for registering and posting.. i'm desperately looking for a decent MP3 player, and a Video player that will play .mpg .mpeg and .avi if anything out there even exists. Like I said i'm a newbie when it comes to macs heh.

I've checked out winamp for an mp3 player but i can only find a Mac OS X build, nothing for 7.6 (68k)

Any and all help on these questions will be greatly appreciated!

The 3400 isn't that old that it needs to run OS 7.6 - is it?!

I reckon that you could easily run OS 8 on it, if not even OS 9... You'll find software for everything you want for OS 9, and, I would have thought, most of it for OS 8. I had a 5300 (which wasn't as good as the 3400, even though the model number doesn't look as if it would suggest this), and I'm almost definite I was running OS 8 on it.

I suppose the question may be how much RAM you have? This could be a deciding factor.

Being an anal website designer, I have a back-up CD (somewhere) with all the browsers back to Netscape 1.1. I'm sure there's old Movie Player on there too. Give me a shout if you want me to look it up.

Well, as is this laptop only has about 32 MB's of ram, lol. I just got it up and running two days ago, so I haven't even looked at prices for new ram or an upgrade on the O.S

If you found an old movie player and/or mp3 player, I would really appreciate it!

And no. I don't absolutely need to run O.S 7.6 - one of these days i'm sure i'll upgrade, just need to find prices.. and a computer shop that carries mac stuff. I know from experience that macintosh has very little to no support in this town.. I had to order a brand new ac adapter ( $75.00 ) which cost me more then the comp itself is worth, lol. ( Only paid $25.00 for this from a friend, it runs awesome though! ) I Called around Everywhere and not a single computer place here had anything for macs.

-- sigh --

Just had a look in MacTracker for you. Looks as if you can run OS 9 (up to 9.1) - so my recommendation would be to at least up to OS 8 (which I thought was a pretty good one).

32mb of RAM you say?!?! Nice one! I'd also up this - RAM will be very cheap for this on eBay I would have thought. Max it up!

I was going to include the MacTracker screengrabs for you to see the info I found, but can't see how to embed them in this post...

I'll try and look up that old software - but having just moved flat it might be a 'mare to find.

Later.

Yeah i know all about moving.. lol. My dad was in the military for over 20 years .. we moved a lot! It can be a total nightmare looking for things.

If you happen to stumble upon anything useful, I'd really appreciate it

But theres no need to dig through your things just for my purposes hehe. I'm patient enough to wait!

So I can run OS 9 on this thing? Very nice.. i'll definitely look into that, thanks for the info!

One more question, I looked at the system diagnostics and it says this has a PowerPC processor, why is it only 68k apps will install and run properly on here?

Thanks again!

Visit Charles Moore's article archives at AppleLinks.com and also at Macopinion.com's Powerbook article series for frequent discussion about 3400's and what works well on them. He had one, and may even still be using it himself or one of his kids, and pushed it to it's limits.

There also actually is a web site devoted to 3400's that got mentioned in Charles articles.

And of course, there's Lowendmac.com for legacy enthuiasts.

With some searches you should uncover a wealth of information on 3400's.

BTW, I have the service manual PDF (about 5MB) posted here:
