Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience from today with everyone, FYI in case you find yourself in a similar situation.

Last night I was working away on my 3 week old TiBook 867Mhz. It was moderately warm, nothing crazy. All of a sudden the top right-hand-corner fan came on fullspeed (which was startling as i'd never heard it rev up that fast)... 10 seconds later the machine went into sleep mode on it's own.

Thinking it was just an oddity, I pressed a key on the keyboard, clicked the mouse button, pressed the power button, etc... however the machine REFUSED to wake up... the pulsating light just kept glowing.

I had to remove the battery & wait for the remaining charge to drain (about 5 minutes) in order to proceed further.

Upon restarting the machine, it immediately went into sleep mode once reaching the desktop and of course refused to wake up (tested on both OS 9 and X).

I tried resetting the PMU several times, zapping the PRAM, everything I could think of!

Finally, I tried a single-user boot into OS X (Apple-S upon restart). The following message was displayed on the screen over and over:

"Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep". So, by booting into the text-only mode of OS X, I was able to get a further indication of the problem at hand.

I called Apple Canada & seemed to completely stump them with this problem. They immediately deferred me to my local reseller for servicing. So, this morning I brought the TiBook into them. They haven't seen this specific error before, but they were able to determine the power management subsystem on the logic board is fried. It will be a few days before I get the TiBook back, they need to install a new logic board. All of this after 3 weeks of purchasing the machine!

I shouldn't complain however, i've owned countless Macs over 15 years & have only ever had 2 hardware problems (the most recent included).

I wanted to post this message as a helpful hint to those that find themselves in a similar situation. Try searching for the above error message, you will find nothing about it anywhere.

Anyhow, that's my story! Can't wait to get the TiBook back!!

Cheers,
Emeril
