Im thinking of finally switchin over to the mac side of things, im looking into gettin a max out 12 in. pbook (been waiting for an update for 6 months), i notice how Apples dont get outdate as fast as say their PC couterparts, seen ppl running Panther betas in 300-400 Mhz and it runs smooth, so to start off in the apple world im lookininto a 12 in pbook, eventually movin into a G5 but thats gettin ahead of myself. Well back to the topic in hand, I read the spec sheet @ apple.com and it says it can push another display up to 1600 x 1200, now is that in monitor spannin? or in clamshell mode?. Since i have a 19" in. monitor im planning to use it for some extra desktop space while im a my house, and is that 1600 x 1200 32 Bit color @ 85Hz (very important)..because if its a 60 ..oooo my poor eyes. Thanx for the help guys, appreciated.

I don't believe that it supports a closed lid monitor as this would put the system to sleep. I have a 12'G4 PB and have yet to find a way to do this. What it can do is give you seperate desktops on the internal and external displays. I have mine set up with a 17" CRT and I get 75Hz max. My monitor is also old.
Soon I hope to switch to a 17" LCD.

I heard that once u have the pbook closed (sleeping) u hook up a USB keyboard and mouse to it, hit a key on the keyboard and it will wake up and use the external monitor that u have attached to it as the primary monitor.

Yup, the PB 12" doesn't support close lid operation out of the box, but I have noticed that whenever I unplug or plug my usb mouse while the PB is asleep it comes back from standby. I have verified this on my external monitor and have been able to navigate around with the mouse so it's definitely possible.

You can also put the Powerbook into clamshell mode by closing the lid immediately after the startup chime.

according to apple knowledge base, the 12" supports clamshell mode by simply closing it and hooking up a keyboard/mouse.

now, back to your original question... the 12" powerbook will support dual display (extended) so that you have 2 different 'screens' and mirror mode.

the refresh rate is not 60hz, it can go up to 85hz i think, but i'm not quite sure if it can do 85 at the highest resolution (i don't have a monitor here to test it out).

Yes, the 12" will support clamshell mode just fine...I use mine in clamshell mode over 75% of the time. The highest refresh rate I see in the Display prefpane for my 19" monitor is 75 Hz @ 1600 x 1024, but it's an LCD so not a concern for me.
