A little poll for you. I'm looking for a new cell phone:

- must have Bluetooth
- must support iSync
- design to match my PowerBook
- no built-in digital photo cam needed

Thanks for your suggestions!

Motorola is coming out with a V600 model very soon, looks promising. I am a big fan of their phones, something they seem to be pretty good at, unlike other things they may do lol.
Current Macs:
15" PB 1.5ghz G4, 512 mem, 80 HD, 128 vram
Dual 2.5 PM G5, 1.5 ram, 240 HD, 6800 GT
20" ACD

Agreed on the S/E 610.

Matches my TiBook fairly well, but will be even better whenever I upgrade to an AlBook. Just make sure you get the "Aluminum Haze" model. Works great with iSync, you can copy pictures to the phone using OS X's Bluetooth xfer utility, and it's a pretty nice phone.

I have the Nokia 3650, which is a full-featured phone (GPRS, J2ME, Bluetooth, camera, supports iSync, can run the Opera web browser, etc.):

If you find that too big, I'll second the nomination of the Motorola v600, which looks pretty nice; a flip-phone (more popular here in the US than in Europe) with Bluetooth. No word yet on iSync, but the last rev did add support for a bunch of Motorola phones:

Thanks!

I don't like the buttons arranged like a wheel on the Nokia. My current phone is a Nokia 6210 (no bluetooth).

Personally, I don't like flip-phone designs.

So, S/E T610 looks most promising for me. I don't need the camera though.

I've had this phone for less than a week and it is awesome! The interface is great and the bluetooth is freakin' awesome. I didn't realize all you can do with the S/E T610 and your Powerbook. Great combo!

the T610 is a great phone, a couple of people at work have got these and they work a treat.

I've personally got the T68i which also works well with the Mac. the only downside is the T610 has a better screen if you want to view any images you beam across.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt it will make a major release for Sprint. SE recently announced that it will be dropping its US CDMA research and development efforts. There are rumors that Sprint has 30K phones they already bought prior to the announcement. Additional rumor is that the phone may see a "small" release in selected markets. Unfortunately I dont expect to see a bluetooth phone for SPCS prior to next year. The TREO 600 has SDIO support so you could buy a bt card and go that route, but that aint ideal.

I am getting the Nokia 3650. I didn't like the S/E offerings because the screen blows when you are outside imo. If I have trouble seeing a screen outside, I don't want the phone. No problems whatsoever with the Nokia.

This thread of which phone went with which computer struck me as a bit strange. I felt the selection of a phone was based on many factors aside from aesthics and function. Coverage for example. My friend, an avid upgrade junkie, picked up a SE T68i when they first came to market. Great phone, fantastic feature set, but horrible gsm coverage. And then there was the issue of calling plans and data plans.

Personally, I chose the Sanyo 5300 and Sprint service solely because the phone easily connected to my Powerbook as a GPRS cell modem and because Sprint had an unlimited data plan. Not a bad one too - I'm getting about 114kb/s. Sure, bluetooth and isync compatibility would be great, but not at 20 cents per kilobyte.

that nokia phone is but ugly. Now that motorola phone v600 looks awesome blue tooth etc. Very thin looks like. They said mid 2003 when will that be. I would really like that phone. Most likely isync will work with it.

Motorola has a terrible OS and GUI IMO. I tried Motorola phones three times and got rid of every single one of them as soon as I could.

The SE 610 is a great phone. Synchs with no trouble, has a decent PIM build in, great quality. You say you don't need the build in camera, I say you will probably be surprised how much you'll end up using it.

Personally, I use it to take pics of my friends and then add them to their address book info. I've also taken pics of stuff I think friends will like or stuff that remindes me of them. I do use it alot, to be honest.

Well I'm gonna get me a rev B PB17 for my T610 when it's out

The T610 is a great phone. The Bluetooth integration with OSX is very well done, though there's room for minor improvements.

The cam sux for any serious use, but is sorta fun. I'm using mine for at picture diary, which will hopefully be great to browse through some years from now.

There's one major downside to the T610 that should be mentioned. The display is STN and not TFT and can be extremely hard to read outdoors when it's sunny. I heard a newer version called z600 is coming with same features but better display, so maybe waiting a few months would be best.

For looks the T610 is small (same as t68) and the alu shell is really (!!) cool. -goes perfectly with any AlBook

I've been using Nokias for the last 4 years, but am really glad about the T610. some stuff took some getting used to, but thats history now.

I've had a Siemens S56 (Cingular GSM) for a number of weeks now and it has been working wonderfully. It syncs via iSync with iCal and simultaneously to my Palm.

I would highly recommend this phone.

Just a few quick questions re the T610 -
When was it first released?
What material is the case constructed from? The website says 'Aluminium panels'; is this really true, or are they just plastic with a metallic appearance?

Sorely tempted to upgrade to the T610 but wonder whether it's worth waiting for Z600... having used the T28 then T39 for a long time, I cannot imagine ever remembering to lock the phone before putting it into my pocket. The flip on the 28 and 39 is THE best feature!

Thoughts?

Couple of things. . . there is suppose to be an updated version of the T610 out soon. Probably within a month or two that sports a new TFT screen. The current screen is suppose to be unreadable out doors, but very very nice in doors.

I still think the V60 and the V60i offers the closes match to the Aluminium of the new Powerbooks. But of course it doesn't have all the new spazzy features.

What phone service do you all get with your spiffo bluetooth phones?

I am getting one of the new PowerBooks, and would like a bt phone + service. I currently have Verizon Wireless (w/o Powerbook), but will move carriers for a better internet connection and Apple compatability.

In another thread, Sprint got good ratings --

Wondering which wireless services accomodate the "Apple-Friendly" phones you are talking about here?

Specifically, what service can handle a

That's interesting...

Are V60 and V60i rather "old" models? I didn't find them on the sonyericsson web page, so the T610 seemed to be the best match :-)

Ericsson T39....

I got mine on eBay. Color-wise, it does not match the Powerbook, BUT, it is one great phone that is smaller than all the new girly looking phones with useless color screens and ringtones.

Cool peripherals too....

The PHONE. I would have to kill myself if I dropped a 17" PB into the lake

But doing this to a 3 days old phone is pretty bad, too.

that's why i always get the insurance of every phone i get. i am a pediatrician who wears his phone 24/7. you might be surprised about all the "trouble" a cell phone can get into in my line of work! that insurance has saved me more than a couple of times. if you didnt' have it... it's time to get another.

either way.... sorry

greg

i'm thrilled it wasn't the 17... then this would have become the RUBBER ROOM thread for you, i'm sure
