Do any of the superdrive uprades work with the newest Titanium PowerBooks from Apple? The reason that I am asking is if I buy an 867 which my school is offering at a good deal, can I then buy a Superdrive later?

So far it seems that all the upgrades are only compatible with the older PowerBooks.

There has been a lot of news about this lately, yes you can get an aftermarket superdrive for your Ti. See this macnn post from today and some other recent postings about drives in this forum.

Thanks. I didn't realize that these worked on all PowerBooks.

Yes, you can get one put it (internally) from www.mcetech.com

However, I think it's better to leave the drive you've got in there and buy the external Firewire Lucid DVD-RW which is a DVD-RW and not just a DVD-R. You get that from MCE Tech also.

That way you have a DVD-Rom, CD-RW, and a second drive for copying from drive to drive in the DVD-RW.

The price is the same for the Lucid and it's REALLY nice and small. We have one.

Uh, the MCE Internal drive is a DVD-R/RW/RAM drive. No need to carry around a second drive.

There are other alternatives.

OWC and PowerBookResQ offer idvd compatible versions. Though both are slower to burn DVD's than the MCE version.

Has anyone gotten the replacement superdrive from OWC?

I was originally looking into MacResQ.com , but the OWC drive is cheaper ....

How does the SuperDrive upgrade effect your AppleCare policy (assuming that you have AppleCare)?

I have the same PowerBook (800 DVI) and would like to install a SuperDrive, but don't want to void the AppleCare coverage.

TIA
