Well, I've waited as long as I could for the 15" updates to come out. But seeing as I need a new laptop, (just sold my iBook and will be resuming fall classes very shortly) I just can't wait any longer.

On one hand, it feels kind of ridiculous to buy an older "new" machine when it's supposedly weeks from being updated, but the new education discounts coupled with my time frame leaves me little choice.

So, after work today I'm driving up to the Tyson's Corner Apple Store and getting an 867 PowerBook. I know it'll be adequate for my needs since my 733 Edu Power Mac is practically identical in specs and is not noticeably slow at all. The one thing that bugs me is the Airport range issues with the older PBs.

Besides I can always sell it later on!

Oh! Can you guys recommend anything else I should pick up while I'm there? Under $200 that is. I'd considered an iSight but I really don't know anyone who uses iChat so it'd be rather pointless.

An iPod.

Seriously - you get a major discount when you're buying a laptop at the same time, - $200 I think (or $300 off if you get a printer too)

Actually, I already have an iPod. I had thought about doing the bundle deal however, and selling the brand new iPod on eBay. That way I would still get the $200 rebate and be able to sell it at near full price.

The only problem is, that's a lot of hassle. And I don't know if I can spend the $299 up front for the iPod. But I will keep it in mind.

I'd do the iPod deal & sell it on eBay; then take that cash and max out your RAM at www.coastmemory.com
5G 60GB video iPod
512MB iPod Shuffle
Westone UM1 Canalphones

are you getting the 12 or 15 867. If your getting the 15 may I suggest you think about the 1ghz cause the deals are so good its a steal.

I've considered getting the 1GHz 15" but I can't really justify the extra $500. The CPU difference is negligable although the extra ram and stuff would be nice but I still have no use for a superdrive.
(I'm actually going up to the Apple store with the poster tonight to get a Powerbook too.)

I had the same justification. I used them side by side at the SoHo store in NYC and the 867 is fine. I am not going to use a Superdrive yet. They are way too slow. Just like CD-R's when they first came out 5+ years ago.

I am actually happy with the 256 RAM that comes with it (for now).
