Hello all - new member here,
I was wondering if anybody is using DVD Studio Pro with a Pismo G4 Upgrade.
From my conversation with Apple support - DVD Studio Pro Section, they said that DVDSP will NOT work with the Pismo G4 upgrade - the 500 or 550 version of the Motorola 7410 chip.
If anybody has any information on this, I would really appreciated.
Pismo G3 500 (Nov 2000)
640MB RAM
30GB Hard Drive

ha ha ha, I'm sure they do, and I'm sure they also say that it works just great on the new 17" PowerBook G4 and ask if you'd like to purchase one.
I have DVD studio pro ver. 1.5, running just fine on my Pismo w/Powerlogix G4 upgrade.
Pretty snappy too, if I do say so.
ciao,
michael

Michael,
That's great news for me - I could use my $3000 to pay off other important stuff.
I am going to assume that DVDSP version 2 will also work with the system?
Below are a couple of more questions -
What kind of burner are you using? Firewire or SCSI (PCMCIA card)
Did you upgrade your hard drive to a faster RPM - 7200 versus 5400 or does it matter?
Did you max out your RAM to 1GB?
What version of OSX are you using and is it stable?
This information will help me expand my horizons - ala GET A NEW JOB.
Thanks again,
VS

DVD SP2? hmmmmm, dunno, I don't expect the system requirements will have changed too much.
Using a firewire burner,
The haddrive speed hasn't hindered me any, I had upgraded to a 30GB drive last december, but I believe it's just a 5400rpm.
I am running Jaguar 10.2.6 with 1GB of ram, and I can't remember the last time it hiccuped, let alone froze or crashed. The upgrade's been quite solid.
If you're going to max out the RAM, and author DVD's, you'll want, nay, need to upgrade to a larger harddrive than the factory installed 6 or 10GB dive. I had upgraded the RAM to a gig with the standard 6GB haddrive my g3 400mhz came with, and the system choked when running OS X, there just wasn't enough space for virtual memory to run efficiently, as soon as I dropped in the new harddrive, everything sped up in a hurry.
I'm also pleasantly surprised with the overall performance and stability of DVD SP.
best of luck
ciao,
michael

I've used DVDSP 1.5.2 just fine on my upgraded Pismo. I can't guarantee the new version will work, since i haven't heard any reports one way or the other. But I would think it would unless Apple put in some artificial restriction.

Cheapest speed booster for Pismo with 10.2.6 is to max out the RAM to 1GB. Huge speed improvement. Also keeping several GB of free drive space always available.
My firewire ATA133 case running Maxtor 160GB with 8MB cache writes large multi GB files with amazing speed.
Next up is a G3 900 because I can.
Lastly, the 7200rpm 60GB Hitachi.
Baerfeats.com and xrlr8yourmac.com report SIGNIFICANT speed bumps writing with this drive. I'm hoping as fast as my firewire 160GB, then it will be worth every penny spent. Those tests seem to indicate it does.
Anyone with one to report?
