Just booted back into OS 9.2 for the first time in months. Not a place I want to stay, but while I was there, I threw an alias of my HD into the Apple Menu Items.

Once the full 22 GB of stuff on the drive had registered itself, I checked out the performance.

Lightning, compared to U know what. IN contrast OSX can take almost 2 seconds to pop-up the first menu, and other heirarchical menus can take a noticeable time, or even worse, produce a beachball before opening.

Well, all that notwithstanding, I was glad to get back into OSX.

Any speculation as to how far it is possible for Apple to manipulate the code to make these kind of operations faster.

Sigh...this is a big topic. Do some forum searches on it--it's been discussed to death. The very short version is that Quartz windows are expensive CPU-wise, and graphic card manufacturers haven't caught up to what Apple's been doing.

The situation is steadily improving, and will continue to do so, but there is no silver bullet.

Is it not because OS 9 has a desktop database while OS X has to manual search the HD each time?

Not at all. There's no single reason. Well, the main reasons are that OS X is a very advanced OS and just does a whole lot more stuff, and also that the Finder is badly written. It's getting better, though.

Everything on X is sooooo sloow...
I constantly want to hit my machine in case this will help it to calculate faster a drop menu!!!
I would have done it if my machine wouldn't cost so much....
I hope things will improve with 10.3.
I constanlty think if I'm such a masochist to stay on a platform that makes my blood pressure rise to the sky everytime I use it....

OS X on a new Ti is quite good... not as good as OS 9, but very usable.

I have an extra 512MB RM in my new 867, and it runs great... very responsive, windows and menus appear quickly and overall it is very impressive.

From what I have heard, Panther should improve things again...

I booted into OS 9 the other day too to do some work. In an hour, it locked up once and crashed twice! This is more than I have had on OS X in 2 years! I had forgotten how flaky OS 9 could be...

Speed may not be there yet, but OS X has it's advantages...

You are correct, 10.3 is shaping up NICELY for a good "snappiness" speed up.

I got to try it on a friend's 12" the other day... really impressive how responsive everything is now.

If you head over to the OSX forum, a couple of the Panther threads popping up mention this. It seems the performance jump is even greater on older (non QE) gear.

From what I saw it looks like we can expect good things.

Yes I knew someone would hit the nail on the head. ALTHOUGH it needs to be understood that OSX 10.3 is still in beta and therefore is not finished yet. The improvements people speak of now might not be there in the final version. Lets just say that the OS is maturing so you can expect imporvements all over the place. I believe this is one reason the finder was redone on top of usability. Also we have to keep in mind we probably shouldnt be talking about Panther because its still has not been released to the general public. I personally am only telling you this from what I have read. I have not used Panther yet. Although I will buy it as soon as it comes out.
