I just recently bought a new Powerbook and have noticed a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen.

There's nothing one can do about that, is there?

Ouch...one of the horrors of LCD's. The *only* hope is to massage around the dead pixel w/ the tip of your finger in small circles while the screen's on and hope & pray it "wakes up". If it remains dead, you've no choice but to just deal with it. It happens a lot though, my 12" PB has a single dead pixel in the lower right hand corner, but thankfully it's only seen when the background is black.

Argh. I figured as much. Isn't there a policy that it's up to 10 before Apple does something?
Or... ?

The policy is that unless there's a batch or either 10+ scattered dead pixels on a single LCD screen, Apple will do nothing as it's considered "normal". Anything under 10 dead pixels, you just hafta deal with sadly.

Dead pixels are a fact of life unfortunately...

Unless you want to pay an extra $1000 for your machine, we have to just put up with them.

Up to my current Powerbook, 6 of the previous Apple LCDs I bought had one or more dead pixels... You don;t even notice them after a while.

LoL, I almost replied like this, however I'm now pretty sure he was being completely sarcastic as ALL pixels are dead & black when an LCD is turned OFF!

Naz, I wouldn't be scared away...you hear of the dozens of people that have a dead pixel on their screen, but there are literally thousands more Mac owners that don't visit these boards that daily enjoy their dead-pixel-free machine. You hear lots about the problematic machines, but never hear about the flawless ones that are plentiful.

And yep, I got my 17" PB on April 4, 2003, and after owning it about a month and a week, I decided that it was honestly too big for a college student who wanted to take his laptop to every class for notes, lectures, wireless internet surfing, etc. It's great for the professional who carries it to work & sits it on a desk, but it's not made for those who carry it everywhere. Thus, I was *SADLY* forced to put it on eBay & I used the cash to purchase a 12" PowerBook which has served me amazingly well as a truly MOBILE machine. With the leftover cash I originally purchased a Shuttle XPC, but soon decided I wanted OS X back! LoL, so I sold that & purchased a Cube in which I upgraded to 800Mhz. Well, a week after that I went to my University's Orientation for Freshman Students & found an INSANE deal on a Dual 1.25Ghz PowerMac, so I sold the Cube on eBay for $200 more than I purchased it for and I'm now awaiting my PowerMac G4 to use as my desktop.

dead pixels, bent shells, bad ram, sizzles?

man that was a nice thread it reminded me when FedEx delivered my first ever Mac... the iMac DV SE 500 I'm using now, I could not sleep at all played with it all night

The 17" will be my first laptop

dunno still may change my mind and get a G5
nooooooo! need to get that thought out of my head. next year maybe...

Lol, I didn't think there was anyone who changed their machine as much as me, but I think you may have have just eclipsed my record!

Heh, yeah, the forums at www.apple.com ARE depressing!

And I just re-read that thread the other day where I was getting my first Mac...wow, just reading it brings back the excitement! But awesomely enough, it doesn't stop w/ the first one! I've been calling my University DAILY now awaiting the arrival of my new PowerMac to their store so I can come up there & pick it up! The fun never ends!

I occassioanly get a stuck pixel on my PB17... i rub it out, and it is cool. Sometimes i go into denial that they are there, and it requires long, hard looks to determine (unless you use pixelchecker apps). In anycase,I sometimes get a mild heart atrtack seeing a dead pixxel that turns out tobe dust or lint fomr the keyboard cover. after a while, you realize, 1) you aren't the only one 2) someone else liekly has it a lot worse 3) there are so many great things about the PBs (12, 15, 17) that you just forget about the little things.

yeah, it sucks once you accept the fact that your PB isn't perfect, but then again, the users are not perfect specimens either.

The trick to the dead/stuck pixel issue: If you cna't see them... DON'T LOOK FOR THEM. chances are if you are suspicious about a dead/stuck pixel, if you avoid staring at it, you'll never notice.

Wait till you are 2.5 years into your applecare, do a pixel check, and if it meets requirements for LCD replacement, go for it.

I'm not joking! when the screen is totatlly back I can see so many dead pixels. There is a clump of like 50 on the right hand side, they are mostly all cyan. On the bright side, you have to look close to see them and I never see them using my mac noramlly.

If you are serious that there are over 10 (and it sounds like WAY more than that) then you should notify Apple immediaitely! You'll get a replacement ASAP if it's really that bad.

I can see one's point about not having good things to say. Well let me be the first to say, I absolutely love the Powerbook 15" I recently purchased.

My poor luck means I have a completely dead pixel right in the center of my display which is very tough to ignore.

Other than that, it f*ing rocks!!!!
