hey guys,
My Ti took a pretty bad fall and I cracked the trim near the headphone jack, it also dented the case around the screen. It still worked fine, but after a couple weeks both hinges ripped out of the back of the screen one by one. I brought it to the campus bookstore who said they have to send it to apple for repair. They estimate $1200 in repairs, but I'm skeptical that the screen doesn't need to be replaced. I was under the impression that the screen and screen case were one piece, and when the hinges ripped out they pulled the screen case apart. Either way, safeware is paying for the repairs, but if the screen is replaced, the machine is totalled and I'd rather get a new machine than have this one fixed. Is apple going to contact me with a repair estimate before they begin work?
thanks

Can you detail your experience with Safeware? I am getting a 12" this fall, and wanted to get a policy with them - my fear is they will replace with a PC, does the policy explicitly state you will get a mac if your computer is stolen/damaged beyond repair?

This is a tricky situation:
I'm to understand that Safeware guaranteed your system to be covered even in the case of an accident?
Apple won't cover accidents, period.
This is an issue that you'll have to take up with Safeware directly.
Also, Apple will not simply swap out a machine like you'd like.
Lastly, I had something similar happen and yes, they can save and reuse the LCD display.
Good luck!

I know someone who had exactly the same thing happen to him, but it was done by a maid at a hotel in Mexico City. Apple wanted to charge $1200 for repairs. They were told to give a written estimate and send the computer back, so that he could see if he could get it covered on insurance. A few days later the computer turned up, with everything fixed... They haven't asked for payment yet, and if they do it's their mistake. He's a happy bunny.

well safeware seems pretty solid to me so far. They don't process apple repairs, so once a claim is made you take your computer to an authorized service center, they write up an estimate and fill out a form stating that the damages likely occured due to the reason described. They did laugh at the estimate I got from the apple service center on St. Croix last month, $2200. I believe their exact words were "bunch of nerds stuck on an island".
The agreement reads a little strange, but it appears that in the event of damages exceeding the value of the computer they draft you a check for the stated value. I did ask about whether they would ever replace a damaged apple product with a PC, and was told the replacement of the computer is your responsibility.

Safeware,com is great!!!!!!
I have used them for over 4 years on all my PBs. One claim paid for all the policies. I had one stolen ... one dropped down steps.... one modem struck by lightning surge?
They have been great! They will replace unit if it can't be repaired!
I wouldn't leave home without it!
