My 12" iBook is gone. After using it since January I sold it in order to get a 15" Powerbook. It was a good machine and did everything I asked but when it came down to it, the screen was just too small for the amount I used it. In every other respect the iBook fit my needs perfectly.
My only other gripe was that the logic board died three times in three months. The last time it happened in mid June Apple replaced it and gave me the 900mhz model. No problems since then.
I considered getting the 14" iBook but the resolution just looked odd on that screen. The Powerbook will become my sole computer once school starts in a couple weeks.
So farewell iBook. Enjoy your new home.

Can you describe what you use your computer for that the 12" screen wasn't suitable? I'm in the market for a portable to replace my MDD 1Ghz, and I was really looking at the 12" iBook/PowerBook. Thanks!

I sold a 12" Powerbook (same screen as iBook) to get a 15" Powerbook...

The screen res is much much better on the 15" Powerbook as is the LCD quality.

For graphics apps like Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign, the 15" screen is very compelling...

My eyes aren't so good. With extended use, the iBook took its toll after a while. Also, when I'm working on papers (Which I do quite a bit being a history major) I tend to keep multiple documents open or a Word document and a Safari window that I'm doing research online with. With the iBook I'd have to constantly flip back and forth. With the PB I can have them open side by side. Seems like a minor thing but when you're writing a lot, it really helps.

simple question here:

I have ONE broken USB port on my iBook 600mhz 20gb -- when I took it to be repaired they said I'd have to have the entire logic board replaced at a cost of $400 (plus the labor if I recall correctly); another place quoted a similar price, though they said that they might possibly be able to repair the USB port itself once they looked at it for around $150.

Frankly it doesn't seem all that damaged -- just the white clip came out and one of the metal pins is "slightly" out of line. It actually still works if you hold whatever you're inserting into it just so, but of course it got worse over time.

I've subsisted for months with just one USB port and a 4 port hub but now that I've gotten a Digidesign Mbox I need to have one USB port dedicated just for it or else it won't work well, though I'm tempted to try out Griffin's "Audio USB Hub" which they seem to think would work.

To make a long story short though -- as the poster above stated they'd had their logic board replaced three times and the last time Apple put in a 900mhz one I was thinking I could get my USB port fixed AND upgrade to 900mhz -- is that right? I'm not that much of a techie and didn't know the two were inter-related.

If anyone knows the best place to get this part on line let me know, or of what other options I should pursue.

thanks

Just to specify here. Apple replaced the ENTIRE machine with a new 900mhz iBook...not simply replacing the logic board.

iBook...

I've had similar problems recently with my 500mHz iBook. It would just randomly shut down. Apple has replaced the logic board twice in four months. Maybe the third time will be the charm and they'll give me a shiny new, faster iBook.

I had the logic board replaced in mine awhile back too. The way the rep explained it to me, it seems like the logic board is the computer. Or rather, it's one of three major components inside: the logic board, the hard drive and the CD drive. Pretty much everything but the spindles is on the logic board. So it seems like if you wanted to pay for the 900MHz logic board to replace your broken one, it wouldn't be a problem.

As my iBook is the 600mhZ (sorry -- the lower case "Z" on my NEW Apple USB keyboard is already broken...) if I decide to shell out $400 for a new 900 mhZ logic board well it be widely noticeable how much quicker things will run?

Basically, is it worth it?

I just bought 512mb RAM but it hasn't arrived yet. I know this will make things much better but was wondering what the comparitive difference overall would be.

Otherwise I have a lot of drive space (though only 20GB internally... 60GB + 180GB externally)

The ethernet port on my iBook seemed to stop working, and it would only work when I pushed the cord in, and up. So, I had a tictac case holding it in place for a while.

I took it the the Apple Store a little while ago, and the genius said that Apple probably won't fix it, because it was "abused." However, the ethernet port stopped working before I used the tictac case..thereby not being caused by the tictac case..ironically, it was the "abuse" that KEPT the port working.

Apparently, I would need the entire logic board to be replaced.

Should I call Apple and ask them, or do you think it's one of the things that I should suck up and deal with, now that I've made it look like I "abused" y iBook?

Go to a different authoried Apple reseller that does repairs and start all over... just no mention of tictacs this time.

I'm still reeling from my broken USB port... the white clip came out practically right after I bought it, but I was so busy with work I couldn't afford any down time at the moment, plus it was still working at that point even without the clip in there, just made things a bit loose.

Then right around the year-end period of my warranty I slacked on it and didn't take it in... figuring (this is my first Apple) how expensive can ONE broken USB port be? Only to learn it meant $400 + labor to replace the entire logic board.

I emailed one place in California that said they "might" be able to repair the port without replacing the entire logic board (for $150) but that they'd need to see it first -- I'm in NYC so that's not that do-able. I'm surprised the place I originally took it to in NYC (Tekserve) couldn't do that then because they're supposedly more adept at repairs than the Apple store itself, or so people say. I've got another place I should call (Digital Society).

If anyone knows of another place in NYC to look into let me know. I've also been keeping my eye on eBay -- one just went for $250 but they don't come up that often.

I have a friend who can do the repair so that's no problem.
