I have a Pismo (500 MHz PowerBook) which currently runs OS 10.2.5 with 768 MB RAM.

I do know that some Apple users have complained that their Macs will not see
hard drives larger than 130 GB. Larger hard drives (160 or bigger) simply
provide approximately 127 GB.

What is the largest external FireWire hard drive that can be fully accessed
using my Pismo and running 10.2.5?

Thank you in advance,

Hi,

I am using a 120 gig LaCie D2 firewire HD with my Pismo G3 500.

Havent heard that larger drives could pose a problem. I have been considering a 160 gig when this one fills, so I would like to know the answer to your question as well.

BTW, the LaCie is one very nice, rugged (aluminum case), quiet (no fan design) hard drive.

Best wishes,

Rich (Pismo G3 500)

Maxtor 160GB in firewire shows as 160GB on my Pismo. All you need is to be sure the firewire case has ATA133 support.

The size limitation only applies to internal drives. There is no limit on firewire drives.

Just don't grab an older Oxford 911 case, be sure its the newer series (most all recent) 911 with large drive ATA support mentioned in specs. OWC, ADS, etc.

I just put a 200 GIG HD into a firewire case and hooked it up to a beige G3, no problems. The firewire port on your Pismo would not be the problem, it would have to do with the case, as someone had said before.

Make sure the firewire case has ATA 133, and not lower. ATA 133 can see drives larger than 129 GIGS, otherwise a lower ATA bus will only see the first 129 GIGs on the drive, and you'd be left out.

Anyhow, that is my explanation.

Attention all Pismo owners. Give me your Pismo! Please... I have Pismo envy.

When I had repeated corruption after starting to use a LaCie 120 external (aluminum case) and went back and forth with LaCie tech support, they warned me that "something installed by Palm Hotsync for OSX" corrupts the LaCie drive -- workaround is to boot with the shift key down, if the LaCie is connected.

Drive hasn't corrupted since.

Pismo, 10.2.6, 1024 mb.

It's all beta.
