I'll be buying a TiBook in the next few weeks, and in a month and a half I'll be moving to Japan for a year. I'd like to be able to watch Japanese DVDs on my TiBook, but it'll be set for the North American region. I'd like to change the firmware so I can watch DVDs from any region. Since I'll be returning to Canada in a year, I don't want to have the firmware set to Japan.
Has anyone done this with the latest model 15" TiBook? Is it safe to do? Is it difficult to do?

TIA,
Mike

You can change the region on your DVD drive 5 times before you are 'stuck/locked' to one...

You could conceivably use the North American region, then change to Japan, then back to NA and still have 2 changes left...

However you can reset the region on the drive with some software that is 'out there', but *Shhhh!* I don't think it can't be discussed here...

Google is your friend...

Things shouldn't be too hard to track down as when I happen to stumble across some similar info last year, there were many sites devoted to the issue.

Peace,

Marc

Dunno about the combo drive, but there is no region free firmware for the PB SuperDrive.

Yep you are right, none about for the Superdrives, but combo drives are no problem..

I would draw your attention to the fact that using any firmware 'modifications' will void your warranty in a big, big way... In all honesty NOT a good idea.

Don't know if that link was allowed, if not, sorry in advance!

Peace,

Marc

Some of the drive flashes are reversible. My Toshiba combo drive in my iBook could be flashed back and forth.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to consider this carefully.

When you say it will void my warranty, does this mean that Apple will no longer support my Powerbook for any problems at all, or just ones related to the DVD drive?

Thanks again,
Mike

I think this would mean that, when your warrenty is voided, Apple will no longer support any of your PowerBook problems.

If you're about to get a PowerBook, I'd really recommend you get AppleCare and extend your warrenty whenever necessary. Infact, you should get AppleCare and extend your warrenty for almost any product you buy especially for laptops like the iBooks or PowerBooks.

All in all, just think about it all first, you might regret it someday, or you might not.
