Greetings,
I would like to set up a wireless network for my home. Are there any alternatives to the Apple Airport card that would fit in a 12" PowerBook? How about a Clamshell iBook? I'm resisting the airport cards because of price. Is there a more ecconomical way to go? Thank you in advance.

Hi, and welcome the MacNN boards!

For the 12" PB, there's no other alternative to installing an internal "AirPort Extreme" card. However, www.macmall.com usually have these "open box" for around $65, which I where I purchased mine.

The Clamshell iBook uses a regular "AirPort" card, which can also be found around the web at a few Mac resellers lke MacMall refurb'd for much cheaper.

The reason you can't just use any ole PC-slot wireless card is because both the 12" PB & iBook lack a PC-card slot. You'll be extremely pleased w/ the Apple AirPort products, even w/ the slightly higher costs.

I've messed around with a few wireless products in the past, but Airport really is the best and easiest...

I would recommend it 100%.

However, it is worth remembering that if you were to use 'Airport' on an 'Airport Extreme' network, it will slow it down to the slower 'standard' Airport speeds...

Peace,

Marc

Just get the Airport Extreme card. It's the only option, and would be the best anyway. Plus it's not terribly expensive.

As for the wireless router, any good brand should do. You don't have to get an Apple base station. However, most of the cheap ones are 802.11b, not 802.11g, so you'd get only the lower speeds of 802.11b. The 802.11g routers out there are cheaper than Apple's, but aren't dirt cheap like the 802.11b routers. (For me it doesn't matter since my TiBook only supports 802.11b. So I picked up a $35 refurb SMC router. Works fine, if I set the machine at 11 Mbps.)
