hey all

powerbook g4 Ti 400mhz 512mb ram
OS X 10.2.6

how do i turn off the macintosh noise on startup (the initial power on button)

i take the laptop to uni and its embaressing having the tone going off every time i turn my laptop on (especially during the quiet bits of the lecture)

i know if i leave the laptop on mute when i turn it off it won't go.. but i want it to never be there anymore!

cheers

Have a headphone plugged into the headphone jack...that's the easiest and safest way, if you are worried about it.

Why are you shutting your PowerBook in the first place? Just close the lid and let it go to sleep, ready to be instantly available when you reopen it.

If you hold the mute key down when you power on it will temporarily prevent the power on tone - not sure about permanently disabling it though (you'd probably have to do it in openfirmware).

go to a radio shack (or something) & get a miniplug; just the plug, not a cable, & put it in the headphone jack before starting up.

there was a hack in 0s9 to mute the start sound...miss it!

(what i do is turn the volume all the way down before i power down when i go out w/my pb...so it starts up silent)

If you mute your Powerbook before shutdown, it will be silent the next time you power on.

Just put it to sleep and you'll never have to worry about it.

i agree with the sleep method, i turn my computer on in the morning, and leave it on all day, it takes more battery power to shutdown, and then start up again than it does to sleep....

Never shut your TiBook down. Just close the lid and say "goodnight."

I press and hold the mute button on bootup to prevent the startup sound.
