I am having trouble figuring out exactly what kind of RAM to get for my powerbook. When I have used a couple of configurations at crucial and dealram, I have come up with RAM that has a different pin count than the RAM that apple sells for the PB through its website.

What's up with that? What are the exact specs, including pin count, that I need in a 512 chip?

Thanks for the help,

sceldred

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!

Most RAM is cross-platform, regardless of what Apple tells you/sells you. I got my extra RAM from www.coastmemory.com as they had the best prices when I purchased. You simply select your Apple machine at their site, and it shows you the appropriate RAM & it's guarenteed to work. Crucial's site has this same feature.

Circuit City was selling a 256MB PNY chip for $40. I got one last weekend.

Hi, Sceldred.

Make sure that you are looking at the SODIMM memory on the Crucial and DealRam sites, or go by the PowerBook model. If you could tell us the model, it would help, since the different machines use different speeds of RAM.

i have a slightly different question, but as its to do with powerbook ram its probably appropriate here.

this is a very newbie-esque question, but is it okay to have 768mb of ram where 256 is from apple and 512 from crucial? i ask because a) you can't configure a powerbook with this much ram on the apple site so i just want to chack its okay and b) i don't know if its okay to mix brands.

thanks!

Your setup is perfectly fine; mixing RAM isn't an issue and neither is your amount, you're perfectly fine.

that depends. do you have the 12" or 17" PowerBook? (neither will let you build one with 768mb of ram, but for different reasons.) if you have the 12", you cannot do this since there is only one user-accessible ram slot. on the 17", however, this setup would work fine.

hi all,

i was very pleased with OWC (otherworldcomputing) for buying RAM. i picked up a low profile 512 mb stick for my g3 500 pismo for about $75. best price around, it arrived fast and works perfectly. the only complaint is they didnt answer my email questions before purchase. but when i called, they gave me the info i needed without any hassle. all in all a good experience.

best wishes,

rich (pismo g3 500)

neither! i'm going to go for the TiBook, i have come to the conclusion that its even better looking (not that this is the main reason) than the Alu books: for the same reason i wear retro 80s nikes instead of shiny Max Airs, i like the retro (in computer terms at least) stylings of this machine.

Oops, I have the 12". I have figured out what kind of RAM generally, but the pin counts all seem different. I thought that this would be a problem, but maybe not?

Look in the owner's manual that came with the PowerBook. It'll tell you what you need. (So does the Apple website.)
