Well, since there is some kinda hack to enable screen spanning, do you guys know of any hack or any way to make the resolution in the iBooks get bigger than 1024x768? Is there any rumor of that?

Also, since i am somewhat talking about spanning, I'll ask another question. Exactly how dangerous (or safe) is doing this hack? I am planning to buy an iBook very very soon, and it would actually be useful to enable this feature. However, I would not want to compromise the life of my iBook.

Okay, well your advice and comments would be greatly appreciate. Thanx!!!

The maximum resolution of an LCD screen is the physical number of pixels that it has, i.e. in this case 1024 by 768, it is impossible to display more detail i.e more pixels without actually increasing the number of pixels. (if you get what I mean). You can lower the resolution e.g. 800x600 etc, but the image becomes all blurry, LCDs only look clear at their native resolution.
The spanning hack simply allows you to span onto another screen, a feature of the video card but Apple disabled it on the iBooks, presumably to differentiate them from the Powerbooks.

cheers Ry

yes it lets u have higher resolution on the external moniter
i have my ibook at 1024x768 and my 17inch at 1280x1024
it looks like it can go higher then that but my moniter wont handle it

and the "hack" is pretty safe, u can make it so it only works till u restart, but you can have it to work till u reset the PRAM

*oh ya, you need a newer ibook with a radeon7500 or more

i have a 700mhz ibook with a 16meg card in it and it works fine since i put it on in january
w3rd..

the grafic card offers you just on the external monitor a higher resolution (try less colors).

i did the hack - BOY! i was nervous! i'm an apple user since 1986 - and now you have to fumble with open firmware, prompts, stuff like this!!

work like a monk - very slow, very precise, no distrubences, you have ONE shot only.

but the result is impressive! all my clients are fascinated "...ooh, you're doing this show //keynote presentation// with this tiny lil' machine..." (spanning is very usefull with keynote, cause you can read your notes on the iBook, the beamer signal is "clean"

enjoy your iBook! it's worth every cent!
