I have been using Virtual PC 6 on my Powerbook for quite a while now and then I noticed the updater for 6.1 on Microsoft's websight. After I downloaded it and installed it the setup assistant comes up as usual and then when it asks for my serial number I type it in but the "next" arrow button stays grayed out and won't allow me to finish the setup.
I tried to call connectix but they don't support the Microsoft versions and there's no way to get in touch with Microsoft. Is anyone else having this issue?

My update worked fine. But, it didn't ask me to enter my serial #, it just went ahead and updated.

I guess the updater doesn't like your serial #.

Ahh, you should've guessed!

Wanna know the only thing this Microsoft update does to your current version of VPC? It re-checks your Serial # & disables all versions that were previously using cracked serials! Wow, HOW MICROSOFT-LIKE!!! *shakes head*

i figured they would do that.. same thing they did when they updated office... i know this is a whole other can of worms, but i didn't buy vpc because i don't use it enough to justify it (frontpage 2000 exclusively) and i wouldn't be caught dead with a purchased copy of windows. Also, i don't like the idea of MS having that much more HD space on my computer. I'm trying to eliminate MS products, not add them...

I hate Microsoft as much as anyone, but what exactly is wrong with filtering out people using illegal copies of Virtual PC?

I can kinda understand people ripping off vpc, but you can't get mad at M$ when they catch you. Pretty shrewd business practices, you don't get to be #1 by being nice...

...and why is that exactly? It's okay to rob MS products but not Apple's?

I agree with redJag and am curious to know the answer to that question.

"you don't get to be #1 by being nice..."

I disagree --- they became #1 by allowing their product to be available and easy to put on ALL of your computers

their current practices alienate customers, making it undesirable to purchase their products --- fortunately Apple is capitalizing upon that (KeyNote, Safari)..... and I sure do hope they release a kick@ss version of AppleWorks soon!

surely the only people that this specific case (re validating serial numbers) alienates are users who have cracked copies of VPC, and they aren't customers!

A reason someone might be using a cracked serial.

1. The person (okay what i did )bought VPC 5
2. The update to 6 came out.
(i can't afford that)

3. I d/l a 12 (or was it 18) mb update
4. I'm not paying 100+ (au) for that bs.

The reason I say "I kinda understand people stealing VPC" is just like I kinda understand why someone would steal a car. I'm not saying I condone it, I just understand that a person without scruples might just steal it. Its not right, but I understand that the majority of people surfing this board right now have stolen property on their mac.stolen software and music

Seriously, the update did nothing for performance? So I should not bother?

Do not even bother with it...

I think Virtual PC is going to only get worse from now on.

i am designing a site which is hosted by someone who has very little knowledge with websites, so he thought that by going with fp, he would save alot of headaches.. Obviously, the designing i did in DW, but uploading can only be done (as far as i know) through Front Page...

It's alot easier than to get this guy to change his mind unfortunately..
