I'm in the market for a 12" SuperDrive PB. I played with one at an Apple Store. iDVD performance seemed really slow to me compared with the 17". It only had 256MB RAM but was that the reason why it was so slow? Anyone with a 12" SuperDrive want to comment on iDVD performance?

Thanks!

Slow in what sense? It seems ok on my 12" (640MB RAM).

I have been using a 12" powerbook at one of my clients, and its also very sluggish using iDVD.

but only has 256 megs of ram so maybe thats the problem.

I do like it though, but would not purchase one myself, especially this late in its shelf life.

Surely in september they will intro new 12" powerbooks that finally are over 1 gig in mhz.

my edit (almost forgot) MOST IMPORTANT NOTE:

the burner is only 1x. surely they will have faster burners in the next generation.

Maybe it was because I used it on a 12" with only 256MB RAM. I haven't tried it with 640MB RAM.

Have you had a chance to use iDVD on an 15" or a 17"?

Runs perfectly slick on my TiSD... but that's w/ 1Gb of RAM. A quick 'top' shows:

429 iDVD 36.0% 0:20.49 16 165 282 7.18M 19.2M 15.1M 201M

So it's using about 15Mb of real mem, another 201 max allocated swap (the last two numbers are rsize and vsize respectively).

That's w/ the default project opened and playing it's background (menu) video continuously with my terminal transparent overtop of it (just because that's where it opened).

So... that should give you a fair idea. Doesn't seem RAM is too much an issue, excepting that 256Mb is BARELY enough for acceptable OSX performance with nothing really running.

So it's not a huge RAM problem... but upgrading to 384Mb (or 512Mb preferably) would probably help a good bit.

i have used it on my 12" and it seems to work perfectly. when it begins rendering and burning, it seems a little slow and doesnt always refresh the time remaining, but it doesnt stop working. i am happy overall with its performance. im sure it could be better, but it works just fine.

i have 640 mb's of ram, btw
