Installed a new hard drive...now on startup...i'm either getting it to start to boot from CD then it crashes, it turns off ater 30 seconds or now i have a blinking sleep light..

I have tried it w/ and w/o the battery (which is actually new) plugged in, and it still does it every time? PMU? help!!

resetting the PRAM seemed to help the random turn off...but now the flashing light...HELP!

Sorry, can't offer any immediate constructive comment - other than to hope you do get it sorted out. I'm planning on changing my iBook HD sometime in the next few weeks.

SOLIDAge - what HD did you get? I'm wondering of I can justify the extra cost of a 5400rpm drive over a 4200rpm drive.

The sleep light is supposed to blink whe the machine is asleep. Do you mean the sleep light blinks while the machine is operating?

Also, you say it crashes. What are the symptoms? Does the screen freeze? Is it a kernel panic? What?

And you said it starts to boot from the CD. Can it boot from the hard drive?

Off the top of my head I don't think this would be related to the new hard drive. But perhaps you damaged something when you had the machine apart.

Need more info...

Double check that you didn't damage the wires/plug connecting the power button to the motherboard. If that's shorting, it could be shutting off/sleeping your system randomly... who knows?

Bar that, I'd double check the magnet/sleep switch, and make sure it hasn't moved out of alignment or anything (right hand side of the system; half in the screen, which should be fine, and half an inch down from where the right arrow key is).

IBM makes a new 80GB 7200 RPM drive, but it's about $400.

IBM, Toshiba, and Fujitsu make 60GB drives. 4200 RPM drives run about $160. 5400 RPM drives will be about $200.
