I have a cd stuck in the drive of my 12in powerbook and it wont come out even in open firmware. The drive acts like it ejects it but nothing comes out and then reads the disk again. Is there a way to get it out without sending my powerbook back to apple? I just bought it 2 weeks ago.

I had the same problem with my Tibook. The solution was to remove the battery, remove the keyboard, press the reset button, replace the keyboard, insert the battery, restart the computer. It has worked fine since. Good Luck.

try restarting and, as the computer is booting, continuously tap the eject button. This got a Rolling Stones CD un-lodged from my drive. the previous poster's suggestion may work for TiBooks, but since the keyboard isn't removable and there isn't a reset button anywhere else on the new PBs (that i know of), i don't think it will work.

Try the good old paperclip trick. There should be a hole at the right. Insert the paperclip; you'll feel a slight resistance, which is a mechanical thing which will eject the cd.

Unfortunately, the pb12 doesn't have a manual eject hole.

why not? every cd player has. With the slotloading machines it's hidden but there is one.

I had the same trouble, and it really doesn't seem that there is a manual eject. Open firmware didn't work, but I believe the problem solved itself when I turned the power off and then back on (as opposed to just restarting). Had me worried for a bit though.

Lazy Sunday morning: downloaded the manual from Apple and did a search in it.
1. Shutdown computer and restart while holding down trackpad button
(There's indeed no mentioning of the good old papaerclip trick. This does however work with a slotloading iMac DV SE)

Hmm. I though that holding the mouse/trackpad button down when you turn the computer on was the defacto way of 'manual eject' on macs since like '98 or something.

In that case, since he bought it two weeks ago, call Apple and ask what to do. They should have an answer...well, you would expect them to have...

Why in the world would they not include a manual eject for the drive.

They have.
Restart with your finger on the mouse button.

Fold over a piece of stiff cardboard to make 'pliers' and push the CD downwards when hitting the 'eject' button. Worked for me. Alternatively head over to the Apple support forum, there is additional help available there.
Best of luck.

what kind of CDs are you guys putting in these machines? are they CD-Rs? or perhaps audio CDs with lots of artowrk on it? i sure hope you aren't putting CD-rs with homemade labels on it (besides the fact the labels screw up the disc, they peel easily too).
Perhaps your powerbook is trying to tell you that your Dixie Chicks CD is full of crap, and you shouldn't put it in the slot loading superdrive.

I posted this here sometime ago when mine stuck. And I actually found the answer from somewhere else.
Tip the Powerbook so the CD slot is towards the ground and then press the eject button. Gravity should do its thing.
I tried everything all of you are suggesting as well and I also panicked until I found the answer. It seems as if some media is to heavy for the eject mechanism. And then again maybe yours is broke.
I hope that helps.

Im going to look it up I know their is key combo. Zap your pram then try to eject. Holding down the mouse button bypasses your startup disk so that wont work. Unless of course Apple made some changes. Look in your manual for a what do I do when the CD gets stuck. Their has to be a way. If you got an apple keyboard plug that in and try that eject key lol. If you got itunes try its eject button. Ill be back with a better answer later.

I took my PB over to the apple store today, and they couldn't get the cd out. They said the best option would be to have the drive replaced to avoid a future occurance of the same problem. So i'm gonna turn it in on thursday when they receive the parts. Too bad there's no other option.
I've always been pro-slot loading drives, but this is pretty ridiculous.
What did you guys manage?

This helped me with getting a stuck CD out of the superdrive in my titanium. (Restarting didn't work. Open firmware didn't work.)
Thanks for posting the solution.
