Well, my Pismo DVD drive (matsushita) does not work, it even does not close, actually, I replaced it with the weigth saving device, note that I only need a dvd rom drive, not a combo drive.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks bmhome1, $80 seems reasonable, do they sold the whole drive or maybe not the plastic enclosure?

These guys are getting me a new internal HD. It seems there are several options for a new optical drive in the drive bay

hi,

i know you mentioned you dont need a combo drive, but do you know it wont cost much more? And it will definitely add resale value to your Pismo, even if you dont use it much. or perhaps others would be interested?

basically you buy a standard laptop size combo drive (the one i have is HL-DT-ST or LG 4240N now sells for about $90 on ebay), and then install it in the sled from your defunct drive. the trick is to pick one that works with standard mac drivers or ones that can be easily cloned from related modles. If you have a OEM matshita drive, you can even re-use the OEM faceplate with some, mainly matshita, combo drives

xlr8yourmac has a good set of articles on how to do it, and a database of drives tested by people in the pismo. you can read reviews, pick a model you like, and search for it on eBay. this link should start you off if you are interested:

btw: it is easy to do.

best wishes,

Rich (Pismo G3 500 combo)
