(Yes, this is an odd place to post this, but I figure...it's partially about a PowerBook...)

So, I'm getting a car, and I need to get a cell phone. And I'm wondering...

A) If I get a cell phone, should I get a cheap one and use my PDA as an organizer, or get a cell phone to replace my PDA?

B) If I'm going to get a 15" PowerBook next year, will that replace the advanced PDA options (stuff I can't do on a cell phone) enough so that a cell phone and the PowerBook would be enough (no PDA)?

C) Is the PowerBook portable enough so that I could bring it to class everyday next year (I'll be in college)...if it is, then I don't see why I'd need a PDA that much, and I could just stick with a cell phone + laptop.

Yes, this is a weird post. Whatever.

The 15" Powerbook is portable enough. (Heck, even the 17" Powerbook is portable. I carry it around everywhere.)

For a phone I'd recommend the Sony Ericsson T610. They work 100% with OS X, supporting Bluetooth and iSync etc. Get yourself Salling's Sony Ericsson Clicker (software) to go with it, and you will have a powerful combination. You also have the option of getting Internet access anywhere from your laptop using GPRS and your cell phone. (It's like having a 22.8 or 33.6 modem with you all the time, still quite useable). You can sync your Calendar and contacts with your phone, and probably notes as well, this will cover most of the PDA functionality.

Hopefully the 15" will be updated by the time you get it to include Bluetooth.

What I don't understand is, without a keypad or stylus, it seems quite cumbersome to type anything on a phone...

I just finished pondering the same thoughts and issues over in the Peripherals forum in response to another poster... which is probably the better spot for this discussion... so, let me just refer you to that thread... click here. I think with the right phone and a few changes in thinking, there are some very interesting alternatives to Palm.

Yes, but not nearly as cumbersome as having to carry around a pda AND a mobile all the time. And I find text entry on a PDA to be tedious, as well.

I went the Siemens S55 + 12" Powerbook w/ Bluetooth path, and I'm *very* pleased with the combination.

I use my PDA to record homework assignments, schedule tasks, etc. How would I do that on the Siemens...and quickly?

Worst case: call yourself and record the assignment; then type it up later on your Mac.

Better in some cases: with a camera phone, take a picture of the assignment that was written down, then type it up later.

Best case: ??? [someone with a Siemens phone, please answer????]
(This is true curiosity.)

I'm also looking at some of these Palm OS phones... damned expensive... but it would be nice to get rid of the bulkier Palm and just have the one "goes everywhere" device.
