Check out the cover of the September issue of Linux Journal to see a nice photo of a Tibook with the Apple logo airbrushed out. I really expect a more honest approach than this from a Linux journal. See

I emailed the editor about this, very politely. It is ljeditor@ssc.com

This happens all of the time in the ad world.

take a look at the next catalog that you get in the mail with furniture in it.

It's a journal about an operating system... maybe they just didn't want to endorse any specific hardware manufacturer.

Sure, I expect this in furniture catalogs(and have seen it many times), but I don't think it is quite the same in a computer journal!

Also, I understand that LJ is about a particular operating system, so why put a computer on the cover that doesn't even run the OS that you're talking about? (Yes, I know, you can run Linux on a Tibook, but why would you.)

It's just sad to see this kind of deception in a magazine that has good technical content. I expect it in the Ikea catalog, but not from LJ.

A fair question to ask here is: had that been a Sony laptop whose logo had been airburshed out, would you be upset too?

First, it's their journal, they can do whatever they want. Second, as others have stated, this is a common practice. Third, I believe you are only upset because it is an Apple product that we all love that is affected. Oh well.

I think the use of stock photography is pretty common, could be the case here? People want a cool picture, it has an apple logo in it so Photoshop, here we come.

I think the more important issue here is:

Is that a guy or a girl on the cover of that magazine? I have no idea.

Make that "...the GIMP, here we come."

Doubtful. No CMYK support in The Gimp. This was almost assuredly done with Photoshop, or some other tool.

I don't see why all the complaints. Macs are very common in TV shows, movies, ads of all sorts. Very often the Apple logo is edited out so as to make the machine appear platform neutral while still showing something that looks cool.

Only a very small percentage of folks will ever notice that it is indeed a mac.

Plus, you can run a variety of flavors of linux on that Ti so its not like when M$ uses iBooks/PowerBooks in their ads.

lol, i didn't notice the first time, but you're right, that's one of the more ambiguous people i've seen. If anything, though, the glasses are a dead giveaway that it's a woman.

some of the most shameless Mac use i've seen in entertainment is on the show 24, where they use unadulterated Macs, including showing the OS unaltered (whereas in most places they create some kind of generic OS image, or use a windows screenshot (!)) I think it must have something to do with the Set Designer (i think that's who it was) who is an avid Mac user (he was even in an Apple.com 'Pro' article)

surely thats a good thing?

anyway, i've seen shows (just unimportant bbc drama comedies and stuff) where they've used a tibook but taped over the apple logo. i think sometimes they do this as they are not allowed to advertise products (in the UK at least) without special permission. like on old tony hart's take hart where they used to blatantly use pritt stick but covered it up with tape and called it glue stick. i must go now, i've lost my point somewhere...

of course it's a good thing, i'm just saying that it's one of the few places where they use Macs and aren't 'ashamed of it'.

I love seeing movies with screen shots in them and they are hacking another computer with OS 9 by just typing, "go to this IP". I wish OS 9 could hack as easy as a tv hacker!
