Anyone can install RAM in an iBook...
The owners manual that ones with it will explain it roughly.
Here's the KB article on it...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50031
Basically all you do is pop the keyboard, unscrew the "RAM shield", jam that RAM in there (and you do have to push hard..), screw the shield back on, and you're done.

It's easy. As said, take off the keyboard, take out the AirPort card (if there is one), and take off the little shield below the AirPort card (the one being held in place only by two little screws; don't touch the other shield). Below that is the open RAM slot. Good luck.
(BTW, I did this from memory, but it should be right. I might have missed a step or two, but nothing major).

what kind of screwdriver do I need to open up the RAM shield? It looks like a really small flathead, is there a special screwdriver for this, everything I have is too big.

Radio Shack will have what you need, or any competent hardware store.
The main thing to remember is not to lose or drop the screws into the ibook. Some people suggest a magnetic-tip screwdriver--just keep it far, far away from the RAM and you should be OK. And remember to ground yourself by touching metal before handling the RAM.

Yeah, you need a jeweler's Phillips screwdriver to remove the RAM shield.

Any small-ish PH will open it.

You will need a Phillips #0 screwdriver. I just installed 512MB last week and what a difference it makes. Your extra 256MB will help a lot too.

Don't use a too-small or too-large screwdriver, you can strip the heads of the screws, which are quite delicate.

I believe Apple says Phillips #0. But I don't think #0 is a standard size. For example, I bought a set of 6 jewelers screwdrivers from Radio Shack ($10--highly recommended) and three of them are labeled size #0. Your best bet is to have a variety of sizes so you can just use the one that fits best.
