I search for an answer, but haven't come up w/ anything.
My brother has two Wallstreets (don't know the specs) that he claims are having the same problem. They work flawless in 9, but booting into X, the screen dims beyond the point of usability. In fact, he initially didn't realize the screen was on at all- it was only after careful inspection under bright light that he could see everything was there- just no backlight.
He says he has tried to adjust brightness on the keyboard to no avail, and rebooting into 9 fixes it completely. Both react exactly the same.
The version of OSX is 10.2.
Any thoughts?

Sorry, I had the problem, too, but I'm not at home to verify what I did. I was pretty sure it was simply Mac OS X 10.2.6 that fixed the problem for me. It might have required a power manager reset. (Look on the back under the cover.) I know it's working fine now.

Thanks- I'll let him know tonight. I really appreciate the response.

Any resolution to this?
After 4 1/2 years with my Wallstreet, this happened to me for this first time yesterday. Haven't had a chance to try to fix it yet.

As an update-
Upgrading the OS and resetting the power manager on both machines had no effect- the problem remains the same- video but no "brightness" in OS X and completely fine operation in OS 9.
If anyone has any additional thoughts I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a similar problem with Wallstreet (250 mhz) and OSX and would appreciate some help also. I notice the following when booting up:
1. OS9 mac icon flashes briefly, then computer restarts with OS10.
2. After startup, screen flashes white, then turns black as desktop appears.
3. By pressing brightness control, monitor lights up again.
4. Everything thereafter seems to operate fine, even Classic, UNTIL the computer goes to sleep. Then, the screen remains dimmed out even after reawakening. It's possible under strong light to make out screen details, even move cursor and invoke commands, but the screen refuses to illuminate.
Anyone sharing these circumstances or know of remedies? At this point, I just keep it awake, but I'd rather not.

If you have Mac OS 9 installed, have you tried turning brightness all the way up there?
I can remember a problem where the brightness was lower but OK in 9, but backlight off in X.

My brother, who owns the laptops, is obstinante, and refuses to install 9 on any of his machines, so it's not there. I'm going to tell he he has to do it.
If you are still having a problem, I found this at MacOS X Hints. Most of the suggestions involve OS 9 in some way, so he's gonna have to install it.
If it doesn't have 9 installed, you may be asking how I know, it works in 9- booting from a 9 cd, everything is cool.

My damn brother.
The first rule of tech support is "don't believe the user." My brother told me, in no uncertain terms, that he had tried booting from an OS 9 cd, it worked, and booted back to X and it didn't. He lied. He, in his heart of hearts, believed booting from a 9 cd would be a waste of time so he told me he had and had me spend days searching for another solution.
So I made him boot from a 9 CD ONE LAST TIME out of desperation, and, of course, everything was fine once he went back to X. He expressed shock and admitted, finally, that he hadn't tried it.
Good thing I was on the phone and not in person or I would have put my foot squarely in his behind.
Thanks for the help.
