i hope one of the experienced mac usres who post on here can help. I have an ibook, had it now almost two years. It has os9 and os 10.1.2

My hard disk recently died. As it was dieing i managed to back up most files. However, now i turn the computer on all i get is a horrible clicking sound, the obligitory question mark and no way onto the computer - i need a new hard disk. You wouldn't believe it but the most important files relating to my business are still on there - they are worth more than the computer so i'll do anything to get them. They are only small, less than 5mb, but important none the less. I just took the computer to a data rescue firm in a desperate bid to get those files. I know that they are taking the hard disk out of the computer - but what will they try then? Does anyone know? Most importantly does anyone know the chances they'll have in retrieving the data? They are expensive dude!

Any feedback or advice would be most appreciated, i am at my wits end about how to get these files.

thanks TimmyH

I think they have a special machine or something that can scan the actual platter of the drive inside the casing... However there is no guarantee of success.

It will all depend if the files are not corrupted, or have been fully or partially overwritten when the drive failed... However I suspect the Pros can salvage what you need.

As you say, the only think is the price. From when I saw the prices recently, they were extortionate! Is the data that important?

If it company accounts or something that cannot be replaced ever, yep I would pay it, but if it logos, stationary, or something else along these lines, I would be tempted to start again...

Peace,

Marc
