Anyone have any thoughts about doing a G4 500 upgrade or a G3 900 Upgrade? Which one is better. I heard not having a G4 limits you in some ways and was curious if a faster G3 900 compesates in some way?

Thanks.

Unless you do a lot with Altivec enhanced apps (Photoshop, FCP, etc.) the G3 900 will be faster. Overall, I'd say the 900 would be a better choice.

I was thinking of getting the G3/900 upgrade but after some reports about the mod itself I am not that positive about PowerLogix' heatsink capabilities, their mod now looks more like a hack to me (fan activities...). You should check www.Fastmac.com - they have G4/500 and 550s with the original Apple heatsink working.

The G3 900 will be much faster in most things, and keep par with many G4 savvy applications.

If you are really crunching a bunch of PS filters all the time (which is when you'd really see the G4 advantage), you really should have another machine. A cheap windoze workstation set up to run just PS would really be a better use of the upgrade money, or selling your Pismo and use the money towards the puchase of a new PBG4.

There have been a number of postings here with good success of a G3 900 MHz upgrade. I am considering it for our 3 year old Pismo myself, but think the G4 is really not worth the $$ or hassle (you have to send the computer or motherboard in).

I too am lookin at the G3 900 upgrade, but have been hearing some bad info about heating issues due to Powerlogix heat sink. Any users that have upgraded to the G3 900 and have been using it for a while with no problems?
