this may not be the right forum for this topic but...

Can I boot my 12" 800 ibook from an ipod? I'm in the market for an external FW HD but if I can do the same with an ipod then I'll just get that.

AFAIK you can only boot up to 10.1.5 from an iPod. Anyway, even if possible, I would not recommend this. The 1,8" iPod HD seems not to be designed for permanent access. Remember, usually the HD spins up, loads some songs and spins down. If you boot from it, it always has to be running.

You're better off getting an external HDD. The iPod isn't designed to dissipate heat from the HDD spinning constantly and you can ultimately end up damaging the drive in the iPod.

Thanks for the quick replies-

I was curious about any cons to keeping the HD spinning since it's designed for buffering. I guess the external HD is the way to go. I'll just have to get both then! The reason I asked is that I'm installing YDL 3 on my ibook and was looking for an easy way to keep my current install on an external drive. The 30GB is just too small for my liking to partition it up between the two OS's. I know it's possible but I want more HD room anyway so an external will solve both problems. That and it beats booting from a CD to run diskwarrior.

Yeah, it used to work, don't know if it still does...

But you'll tear your iPod to pieces by doing it.
