I took my Pismo completely apart yesterday to have a look at the sound board (loose/not outputting sound consistently - I'll have to go with the toohpick fix or Griffin iMic), found nothing obviously wrong, and fit everything back together. Now, the thing starts up wonderfully and behaves normally except for the keyboard, which is dead in the water. The caps lock and num lock lights don't light in repsonse to pressing, and the computer doesn't respond to key presses. The keyboard doesn't show up in System Profiler (it normally appears under "Bus" I think). I've made quite sure that the connector isn't bent and is seated firmly.

There seem to be two possibilities, one, that the keyboard is broken, and two, that part of the logic board is broken. I wouldn't know the cause of either of these except age; I am careful with this thing when the guts are showing.

Does anyone know of a way to test the keyboard to see if the problem's in it or the logic board? Like supplying aparticular voltage to a particular set of pins on the connector, then trying the numlock key? I ask because it's a trivial thing to order another keyboard but the logic board is freaking expensive.

I might be wrong, but I think that your keyboard is interchangable with the white ones in the clamshell iBooks, so if you know anyone with one of those you could try their one in your machine?...

The keyboard shows up in ASP at all? That's news to me. What "bus" did it show up under? I think the Pismo keyboard is still ADB-based.

The 'Bus' currently has my 2.5in HD on it. The Pismo probably lumps a bunch of devices under 'Bus' b/c I should see a section for ADB otherwise. ....maybe not. This TouchStrokes virtual keyboard thing is annoyingly slow, but at least this way there are no typos.

Hi,

Here's a link to the Pismo service and troubleshooting manual:

http://ftp.codefactory.se/pub/people...werbook_fw.pdf

For your problem: (No response to any key on keyboard), they recommend:

1. Reset the power manager (press the reset button behind the I/
O door).
2. Check keyboard connection by disconnecting and reconnecting
keyboard cable.
3. Replace keyboard.
4. Replace I/O logic board.

You can find Pismo keyboards on Ebay for $35 to $45.

Good luck,

Rich (Pismo G3 500)

Each Powerbook model has its own specific keyboard and they are not interchangeable. Stick with the keyboard for your model.

Actually, that's not true. There have been people who have used clamshell iBook keyboards in the Pismo.

Hi,

Thats interesting, most (or all) of the other models require their own specific keyboards. Wonder if it is fully functional?

What would be the advantage of using a clamshell keyboard when Pismo keyboards are easily available for $35 to $45 on eBay?

Best wishes,

Rich (Pismo G3 500)

I've already gotten a new Pismo keyboard on eBay. It would be the wrong color anyway if i used a clamshell iBook one - I am going straight for black and bronze exterior.
