I just noticed that my iBook (500 mhz dual USB) has a crack on the upper left side of the screen. The crack extends about a 1/4 inch from the edge towards the screen. I called Apple since I have Applecare and was told that it may not be covered since the machine is so old. He said I could bring it to a store and have them look at it and they would determine if it was defective plastics or anything else.

What are my chances of getting it fixed? If not what can I do to stop the crack from expanding?

Well, Apple can definitely fix it. The chances of them doing it for free depend, it appears, on the cause of the crack (defective plastics, as you mentioned). Just take it in and have them look at it. At the very least, you may just want to glue it. I'm not actually recommending this, however, because a proper repair is the best option.
As for preventing it from getting worse, just take it easy on the screen. When you raise and lower the screen, be gentle and avoid putting any pressure on that spot.
