I updated my 17" UJ-815 to a UJ-815A with the firmware update floating around.

Theoretically I now have a 2x DVD burning drive.

So, I use Apple 2x media and the time reported from Toast indicates half the time required to burn at 1x.

Now the fun part, Toast is ticking away the time at around 1 second for every two REAL seconds of time.

I have a conspiracy theory (not reliably proven but scandalous no doubt) --

Apple's 2X media was incapable of handling 2x burning in the UJ815's. They then decided to cripple their drives because of their profit margin on their disks.

Sounds ridiculous right? Yeah, well, I dunno.

I'll get some other brand of media to try the burning again. But so far, it's wierd.

Haha nice reply EUG!

I got some different Apple media (actually it is from a newer batch where the jewel cases are alot chinzier than the full size old ones).. It seems to be burning at 2x

So... one batch was inferior. The end.

Nah, I don't think it's the media.

When I had my 17" PB, whenever I burned a music CD-R (this is w/o the new firmware patch) it stated it could burn at 16x, however, just like you stated, for every second on it's meter, it took 2 real seconds. Different media had no effect.

I had a similar effect with CD burning. Although some media burned at 8x and some at 16x even though they were both rated at 24x.

I guess the UJ815's are very particular about their media...

My cheap Vivastar CD-R media (rated >24x) burn 8x on my 17" PB, too. I'll try with Sony media to compare.

Note that 16X burning isn't really 16X burning. It's only 16X at the outer tracks. If you have a 100 MB disc, you'll never even reach those tracks for 16X.

eg. A 16X desktop drive does a 80 min disc at 13X average.
