Hi, I need some suggestions here, I am currently running on a G4 400 and I am planning on updating before school starts. I am studying in a graphic design school and will be using the usual adobe/quark programs and I am thinking of getting a PB'12 or the PB'15 1ghz.

I have never worked on anything higher then my G4 400 and wouldn’t know the difference in performance between the 12 and 15. Screen size is not an issue because I plan on using my CRT Apple Studio monitor.

The main reason why I've decided to go portable is because I also have a Canoscan Flatbed scanner which is powered by the USB cord and is almost as thin as the powerbook, this will be great when I'm at the library and I need to scan something (also would anyone know if this type of powered scanner have any problems with the powerbook)

So my question is... From using a G4 400 and being ignorant of how slow it is compared to faster machines now, should i get the 867mhz or spend the extra bucks for the 1ghz, mind u I am only using it for graphic design programs, no 3d renderings.

Thanks a buch!

the 1 GHz is probably not all that much faster than the 867. the 15 incher is less portable too. You have to treat it like a baby.

The screen on the Ti's, however, is awesome. I do some graphic design on my 12" Powerbook, but the screen can get a little small. I feel I'm squinting sometimes. Lack of L3 cache and the 640mb max ram is an issue too, if you're gonna be doing some intensive work.

All that aside, it's a great little machine---and extremely affordable. Powerrice ratio isn't bad, IMO.

I would go for the 1Ghz 15". Being a graphic designer myself, I know you can always use the speed and the memory. Photoshop can suck up memory fast and you know you want all your apps open at the same time so 1gig of ram will come in handy.

The L3 cache will make a noticable difference in speed and the 1Ghz processor will not be obselete as fast as the 867Mhz will.

And if you ever want to work just on the laptop screen, you will have alot more screen real estate with the 15".

I believe the 15" will server you better longer than the 12" will.

Also keep in mind that the batteries on the 12" PBs are not hot swappable, they are hot swappable on the 15" and 17" PBs though. This means you would have to shut down to switch batteries if you had a 12", but you wouldn't have to do so on a 15".

I think I shall be going for the 15", because the battery is hot swappable, L3 cache, 1 GB RAM limit, and larger screen. I'll wait till school starts to buy one though (sept 8), and perhaps by then there might be AL PBs... doubt there will be, but for the time being I don't need one.

I don't know about benchmarks, but the 15" feels A LOT FASTER. Integrated Bluetooth and 802.11g are great, but I would have to go for the better screen, hot swap battery, DVI monitor output, and the overall speed advantage of a 1GHz machine.

If you want Bluetooth, just add a USB adapter and you can get a PCMCIA card for 802.11g (and 802.11b is still fast enough for most of us).
