We all suffer from it... most of us are consumer whores.... hell i can't wait to see the update to the 15 inch Powerbook.... but for those out there struggling with whether to wait for the udpate that is just around the corner (unless Apple goes under an update should be due in the next two months) or buy now.. think of it this way.

Some people are still using PIsmos... some people are probably still using the computer they bought back in 1988.... some just don't care....

It's funny, but we all want the latest and greatest and most of the time there is no reason for it.... most of us dont' need ot upgrade... only a few really need the latest and greatest for the applications that requie it, but even then, a two year ago computer isn't dead. It can still do the job for you, no need to panic.

Versioin 3 of a program isnt' obsolete because verison 4 came out. I mean would you write a better novel if you used the latest version of Word or would it still come out the same if you used the first version?

Back to point.

If you want a 15 powerbook, the Ti is a great computer. One of the best computers apple has ever made. In my opinion, ever better than the AL.

Anyway, if you buy the powerbook today and the new one comes out tomorrow... think about this... in 2 years you will get an even better computer that is better than the current 15 AL which as soon as it comes, in a week, people will be waiting for Rev B.

Dont' worry about it. In fact, buy some Memory for that old ibook of yours.... go buy some new software.... reinstall your software so it runs a faster.... clean off your computer... maybe look at the box you bought it in and remember when you two fell in love.....

I say this all because I am a product of it. It's my generation. We want the best now, the future now, and anything older than a week is obsolete and boring an dold and not fun.

Espically for people on this board, I'm sure you went nuts the frist time you say the 15 Ti... i know I idd.. but after looking at it for months, I got used to it... now it's so common place and I see it everywhere, that I stopped thinking about it as remarkable.... because that's what advertising does.... that's how they make money.

I type this all on my old, no good, 500 dual usb iBook that has nothing for me expect everything... that was fine until the 600 came out and made it worthless.

So to all of you waiting for THE NEXT BEST THING, I implore you to wait with your current computer and realize that you only need what you need.

Bluetooth and Firewire 800 won't affect your life the way you think it will.

Besides the quicker you buy a new computer, the shorter amount of time you have to wait to buy another one.

All the best to those of you who wait... and wait... and wait....

I totally understand what you mean.. as my powermac still serves me fine and I don't intend to replace it anytime soon. It's incredible I've had it for 2 years but it still feels like a new machine ^_^.

But as far as powerbook goes, I'm waiting until the rev whether I like it or not. My mom is allowing me to get one sometime around christmas or if not sometime next year.

And to take it further, i don't know what I will get until the time comes. Most likely mid/top end as we prefer the things those lines offer, but time will tell. While many of you have a recent (less then 2 year old) laptop, perhaps, or own an 'aging' 550mhz powerbook or something.. and want to replace that so you can have one that matches your g5, I'm going to be replacing, officially, a 486 25mhz laptop I got in 1998.

Yes, a 486. Why? I never have before had a current laptop AND desktop at the same time. My family has never had the money before and this is the closest ever I'll buy them together. Normally if I were to get a laptop it would be my main computer for 3 or 4 years, and etc.

I don't disagree with you (I still use a Pismo 500 PB), but there is a counter-argument.

First, the latest release of any product will usually have fewer bugs than an earlier version. Nagging problems with hinges, cables, connectors, etc. are usually fixed in later versions. Rev D of a product is usually more reliable than Rev A of a product.

Second, newer products have more modern features. The 15" Al PB (when it finally comes out) will likely support Airport Extreme, it will have Bluetooth built-in, it will have a back-lit keyboard, stiffer overall construction, a brighter screen with better contrast, a better GPU, a faster CPU and numerous other small changes.

Finally, while it is true that even my old Pismo is adequate (though a little slow) for web-surfing and email) it comes up short in many other areas. It doesn't have enough VRAM to make presentations with Keynote. The LCD is not quite as nice as one would hope for presentations, it doesn't have DVI output so I can't connect it to my cinema display.

I guess my point is that while there is such a thing as lusting after something new just because it is new there are also legitimate reasons for getting the newest product.
Happy owner of a new 15" Al PB.

what if we don't have a powerbook (of our own) and are planning on buying one ASAP?

do you still suggest 'buying the Ti' or waiting for the updated 'Al'?

.... because ... i'm waiting ... ARGH!

Just wait. If you have the feeling for waiting do it. Probably the worst thing to do is wait THE WHOLE TIME,.... only to break down a month before the laptop is discontinued to buy it.

That's just pure stupidity. I always say buy after a product refresh if you've been waiting more then 6 months

I was watching the market, and when the price for a 12" PB was dropped to $1399 with EDU discount, and the iPod bundle, I decided to buy. I'm very content with my decision. May new PBs come out this week? Maybe, but I don't care. I got a great machine at a great price, and an iPod to boot.

I suggest buying the Ti if you like it.... because like I said... next time you buy a new computer you will get a better one than the Al.... it's a crazy cycle...

the TI are deals now I think.... could always be cheaper.. but great machines..

OT: I can attest to this fact. I was in an apple store today leaching some bandwidth at the genius bar when some guy came in with an old 7500. It was still his primary machine. (until it burned up). Unbelievable! He had upgraded everything and clearly just loved the machine to death. Now that is value for your dollar.

I remember using my 7500 back in the day. I distinctly remember how psyched I was to get my B+W because of its faster ripping speeds. Of course, that was back when you had to seperately rip the audio and then encode it. Ah, the good ole days.

I want the following:

Great airport reception
No twisting feeling when a little torque is applied
Bluetooth, for my PDA and my phone
No paint chipping
A better video card

That's why I'm holding out, bluetooth and airport reception are by far the two biggest factors.

But, to echo what everyone else is saying, buy what's best for you! My iBook 700 has served me well for about a year and a few months, and now i'm ready to move on to bigger and better...

Anyway, whatever you get, enjoy it and get a good sleeve for it at sfbags.com

How about we all do what we want to. If you want the new PB, etc... go get it. If you want to hold off, wait. There's nothing wrong with either...
