I am getting ready to head out to Cali from Dulles(VA/DC)bout 8hrs..and was curious if any one knows the a good set/optimal set of settings to use energy saver wise on a cross country trip.(on a side note..does jet plug have those laptop adapter plug in chargers?). I plan on using it for either playing the sims to kill time or maybe watch the Twin towers..if the battery can last.

Dude - you gotta plan ahead. first, most domestic flight do *not* have the empower power adapaters in the seat. And if they do, it's in first or business. I fly 500k+ miles a year and I've never seen a coach class power option.

Second, figure you'll get your regular power time out of the battery - perhaps multiple batteries is a good idea.

i don't know what plane you're flying on, but a coast-to-coast flight is not 8 hours. NYC to LA is about 5.5-6 hours, and LA to NYC is around 5-5.5 hours. most airlines have on their website a page that will say which of their planes have Empower plugs, and in what sections. danbrew is right, though, it's almost always only in business/first class on international flights. For optimal battery life, make sure to turn off airport and bluetooth, set the screen as low as is comfortable (make sure to close the window shade so there's less light coming in) and set the power to Reduced level (unless you're playing a game, in which case you can't really expect a ton of battery life). using these settings, you'd probably make it through LOtR (though i have a 12", so i can't speak from experience with the 17"). If you have the cash, get a second battery and the two together should last you the entire flight.

With an 8 hour flight time perhaps you have a layover somewhere for a couple of hours? If so carry on your AC adapter and look for someplace to recharge between planes. There is a wide variation in the availability of AC sockets depending on the airport.

Buy an extra battery if you're going to travel with it regularly.

His itinerary might say something like a departure time of noon and an arrival time of 8PM, and he forgot to factor time zones in.

Anyway, get a couple of extra batteries if you're going to need the laptop for the entire flight. It's no good to have to dim the screen down low and have it so that you can't really do anything.

The only airline I've seen that has any adapters in coach is Continental, where they have about 10 rows of coach on a 777 with adapters. Helped me when I flew back to London recently. If you travel that way, try to ask for a seat assignment ahead of time, or get to check in early.

Not going to help on an internal flight here though, unless their repositioning an aircraft.

Cheers,

J.

If you're flying coach make sure you ask for an exit row seat. That way, you'll have room to tilt the screen back to a reasonable angle.

Put your name and address on a decal on the bottom of your powerbook (where it doesn't get too hot).

I left my white ibook at airport security one time and had my name on the bottom so they called me up and I got my baby back.

I guess hundreds of laptops are left each month at airports thruout the country.

I'd NEVER think I'd forget mine, but going thru security well.. that can get your mind flumexed so make sure you label it.

Have a safe flight.

777 on AA says they have plugs in the coach class but just not every seat. It is all explained on their website. But doesn't matter for me, cos I don't have a Empower adaptor nor an extra battery, from London to Miami (7hours) my old 15"SD with everything turned down went through Star Wars episode II without a problem. Don't know what the situation with my 17" is tho

Seems to be common to 777's then. Continental's have empower sockets in rows 17-23.

Got my empower lead for $30, well worth it.

I don't know about you guys, but I flew from charleston to chicago a month back. First time I took m 17"pb on an airplane ride. Anyhow I didn't have the luxery of a exit seat or first class and I took the powerbook out. JEEEEZ, scary, it doesn't fit at all, no room really to each side (comfortable room that is) and definitely no room up front. I got 5 min. into my movie and the guy in front shifted in his seat and it got dangerously close to my laptop screen so I put it straight back in the bag. Only did I take it while waiting for the flight to board (still in the airport NOT on the airplane). I think the 17" is too big for coach flight and it just planned scaired me having it out. Just my 2 cents.
