The display on my first-generation TiBook (400 model) is dying, after about 2.5 years of average use. I've eliminated other possibilities like the logic board and inverter board. Judging by the market for replacement displays for these models (both on and off eBay), I wonder if this is a common problem.

It's the backlights, they die after so many hours of use. Though, you have to replace the whole LCD if that happens.

I realize that, but I would expect more than 2.5 years, especially considering that for more than half the time I was using clamshell mode, so the backlight wasn't even on.

Maybe the heat from being in clamshell mode adversely affected the display? We've theorized that effect in relation to 12" PBs. Personally, I think a 12" LCD won't last too long if the system is run in that mode continuously.
Just a theory.
However, the original TiBooks do seem to have more problems with their displays than their successors. I'm a service tech, and I replace more original Ti screens than later models, but there are more factors envolved (age, weaker hinges, etc).

That's a possibility--I generally kept the lid open a little even in clamshell mode to avoid heat buildup. With my 12" AlBook, that's a necessity.
