My local reseller has a used Powerbook G4 500, 10GB, 384 RAM and a DVD drive. Just wondering what type of things I should look at when physicially examining the machine. They are an authorized Apple Service Center, and they have certified the unit, but I still want to be sure.
I'm buying it because I'm out of time on waiting for a new laptop. I have to turn my current PC laptop back over to my company 9/1, and figure this Powerbook should hold me over until the newer 15 inch models are out.

I would check out the hinges for sure, also you can remove the battery, and make sure the airport antenna on that side is seated correctly. Maybe you can test the battery somehow to make sure it holds a charge that will be sufficient for you. Out of curiosity, how much are you going to pay for the machine? Keep in mind it only has 8mb of video ram, so Quartz Extreme won't be supported. Other than that I think you should be ok. I had a Ti 550 till about 5 months ago and it was great...I have even been told that the 500 was faster than the 550 for some reason...don't know about that for sure though.

Was going for about $950, but someone grabbed it before I got there.
I need to remember to check their web site more often for these type of systems. They do have another 500 Powerbook, but the person selling it wants almost $1500. No wonder it has sat in their consignment room for 4 months now...

Why not look at the Marketplace forum here then?

Hi,
This is a review of high end ($1000+) used Mac laptops:
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/ro.../10/index.html
and low end:
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/ro.../03/index.html
I have NOT heard great things about the G4 500 Ti-book--this was the first Ti-book line, and as many new products, had bugs that were worked out (mostly) by later revisions.
I think I would go with an iBook if you want something sub $1000, or one of the DVI (667 DVI or 800 mhz) Ti-books if you have more funds available. I think those are the best values.
Best wishes,
Rich (Pismo G3 500)
